I'm delighted to welcome fellow author Darlene Fredette to my blog today. Make yourself at home, and lets find out more about Darlene and her latest release.

HL: Tell us a little more about yourself  - and is there something that most people don’t know about you?

DF: Most people don’t know I am a home-body. I’m socially interactive on social media with my author friends, but once my laptop closes, I just want to be with my family at home.

HL:  I think a lot of us can relate to that! What is your latest release and what was your favourite part of writing this book/series?

DF: Nothing To Lose is a fun romance where the heroine applies for a job in a bakery that she is not qualified for. There are lots of delicious desserts being baked that will have you craving a treat.

HL:  Sounds mouthwatering! What do you do for fun when not writing?

DF: Hanging out with my family, either at home or day visits to the Valley. I also enjoy crafting items for giveaways, lounging in the yard, or reading a goof romance in my comfy chair.

HL:  So what comes first: the plot or the characters?

DF: Inspiration usually hits when I’m doing household chores. The plot will come first and the characters soon evolve. By the time my housework is done, I have a complete story outlined. Then the hard part comes…getting it from my head and onto paper.

HL: Yes.  I find inspiration when I'm busy working too - it's surprising how many ideas have come to me when mucking out a stable! 

Just for fun - if someone were to play one of your characters in a movie, which character and actor would it be and why?

DF: For Nothing To Lose, I pictured Travis as Ryan Paevey from General Hospital, and Jesse as Evangeline Lilly from Lost. Both actors would be fitting to play the roles as hero and heroine in this story.

HL: Great choices there! What have you learned about writing since you were published that surprised you the most?

DF: From the time you start writing a new story to writing the end is the easy part. It’s the ‘waiting’ from submission to a contract offer then the process to get to publication is the hardest part. The time delays never change.

HL:  Isn't that a fact! What’s you’re writing process? Has it changed since writing your first book?

DF: When I first started writing, I had a full time job, so I wrote during breaks or in the evenings. Now I write full time, so my writing schedule is more flexible. After a quick browse through emails and social media, I write into the late afternoon. However, daily life sometimes puts a wrench into my perfect plan.

HL: Do you listen to music when you write and if so, what kind of music – or do you find it distracts you?

DF: I love all genres of music, especially the oldies. I used to listen to music while writing, but I found more singing than writing got done…lol, so no more music for me.

HL: LOL - I don't sing, not when anyone can hear me anyway! :) Do you have a support system? Do you have a writing community? What     valuable lessons have you learned from them?

DF: My family is my biggest support system. However, to encourage my daily writing progress, I’m part of an online writing group (Trans Canada Romance Writers) where we celebrate and shout-out each other’s success. I recently joined ABA (Awesome Bad-Ass Authors). My first participation in that group will be later this month with a spotlight blog post, as well as a being part of their Halloween blog tour.

HL:   Oh I must make a note of that - the Halloween blog tour I mean. What sort of research do you do for your books and what’s your favourite source of information? 

DF: The internet is my go-to source for research. While the stories I write are romance fiction, as a writer you want to get the details of locations, events, or specific items as accurate as possible.

HL: I agree. Thank goodness for Google! Thank you so much, I’m so happy to have you featured on my blog and I wish you much success with 'Nothing To Lose'.

The Heir and The Human - Review

It's always a pleasure to feature a fellow Science Fiction romance author, and I have had the pleasure of featuring Siobahn Davis on the 'flightdeck' here, several times. This is my review of her latest book, the novella 'The Heir and the Human'.

My REVIEW:

Having read all the other books in the series. I was curious to know more about Axton and looked forward to reading this latest story. I was not disappointed  'The heir and the Human' adds another layer and depth to the series.

Poor, poor Axton. First he is brought up with a mother who is cruel and manipulative and shows him no motherly love or affection. In fact it's not an exageration to say Griselda is pure evil; then, the girl Griselda introduces into the household as  part of her devious plan for the future, falls for someone else, namely Logan.  In this story, however, we are taken into the past where Sadie and Axton  love each other intensely, and Sadie can't imagine being with anyone else.

My first impression of Axton as merely being a 'bit character' is changed completely in this book as we see how important he really is in Sadie's life, and I found myself liking him more and more.He is sensitive, intelligent, and the only love he has known in his life is from Sadie, and now even that is about to be taken away from him. It seems so cruel. I don't want to give too much away about this latest story, but I will say that it is full of excitement, tension and a good smattering of romance. Love, friendship and betrayal from an unexpected quarter are all encompassed in this latest book. It's not necessary to read it to enjoy the other books, but it certainly adds another dimension to the story and answers several questions that might have occurred to the reader in the previous episodes. It also gives more background and information on some of the other characters. I really enjoyed 'The Heir and the Human' , a fast but poignant read, and look forward to the next book in the series.

Beginnings

The unusually bitter October wind pulled at loose strands of Marie’s hair as she walked briskly along the busy pavement. Checking her watch she noticed with a plunging sensation in her stomach that she was already running five minutes late.

“Damn it,” she cursed aloud as she tried to increase her walk from brisk to fast. Her high heeled shoes clipped manically against the floor creating a sharp staccato soundtrack to her commute.

With as much speed as the six inches of her stilettos would afford her, Marie descended down from the pavement and the ominous grey clouds overhead into the underbelly of the city and the tube railway system.

Despite having lived in London for almost eighteen months Marie still struggled to accept the infiltration of her personal space each time she rode the tube to work. People would push up against her as though she were completely invisible. She’d learnt to use her bony elbows as a weapon against the more persistent of intruders. Clutching her handbag tightly to her chest she boarded her train, moving with the same militant precision as the commuters around her. Everyone seemed to move with such urgency, as though their very being depended on boarding the waiting train before them.

As the train surged in to motion and swept the passengers deeper into the city, Marie dared to remove one hand from her hand bag to wipe wearily at her eyes, careful not to smudge the mascara she’d barely had time to apply.

Marie was tired. The previous night, like all the nights before, the twenty seven year old had struggled to sleep. She lay awake, anxious, as though she were waiting for something though she had no idea what.

It took twenty minutes for Marie’s train to arrive in central London. Not quite long enough to remove her Kindle and delve in to the latest fantasy novel she was reading. She thought about the story as she looked forlornly out of the train windows. Endless miles of nothingness sped by. She missed travelling through the countryside and looking out and seeing endless fields of luscious, green grass. Marie Schneider was a city girl by necessity, not choice. She’d grown up amongst trees and fields not sky scrapers and stop signs.

Every morning as she stood on the tube she wished the same thing; that she didn’t have to go to work that day that instead she could stay home and read and get lost in another world.

“You spend far too much time with your head in books,” her mother would note with disapproval.

“Reading stories won’t get you anywhere,” she’d add callously. Marie would just roll her eyes. Her mother didn’t understand the magic which existed within a great story. She was too pragmatic, existing only in the moment. But Marie dared to dream bigger. She always secretly harboured the belief that she was meant for great things, that her destiny would somehow be wondrous.

Yet as she stepped off the tube and an overweight man in a suit already covered in sweat pushed a little too close up against her Marie realised she was hanging on to her romantic notions of a better life with a very thin thread.

“Excuse you!” Marie exclaimed as the man peeled himself off her and headed towards the escalators. He didn’t so much as turn back and offer an apologetic glance.

“Chivalry is so dead,” Marie muttered to herself as she straightened her blue dress which was adorned with patterns of white tipped daisies. Checking her watch she realised she was still running late, so taking the briefest moment to tuck back any loose strands of hair which had wrangled themselves free of the bun at the nape of her neck Marie headed out of the tube station, back up to the surface.

Emerging in to the dim light of an autumn morning Marie squinted slightly, feeling momentarily as blind as a mole squinting up from the ground. She could scarcely afford even a second to get her bearings. Her boss, Amanda Pickens loathed tardiness almost as much as she loathed those who opposed her right to wear real fur.

When Marie finally pushed her way through the glass doors of the office building where she worked her cheeks were flushed and a slight spattering of perspiration had formed upon her forehead.

Monday's Ramblings.

I stayed up late last night to watch the closing ceremony of the Paralympics.  Now I'm not really a sports fan - the only sport I really enjoy is equestrianism, being a horse owner and lover myself, but am filled with awe and admiration for each and every competitor at the Paralympics, whatever their nationality of specialist sport they were all amazing and to be congratulated on their achievements. Truly an example of what the human spirit is capable of!

They really made me feel very humble and had me watching events that normally I wouldn't have been interested in, but were compelling watching when the competitors were missing a limb, sometimes two, had vision impairments or other obstacles to overcome.  I won't call them 'disabilities' because truly these athletes showed their abilities and inspired us with their courage, focus and determination and can do attitude.

Congratulations to them all, whether they won a medal or not, they were a real inspiration.

I'm so happy to welcome Marilyn Baron, a fellow Wild Rose Press Author, to the Flight Deck today.

I asked Marilyn about her latest release and her favourite part of writing this book:

Stumble Stones: A Novel was just released August 19 and I’m very excited about this book. Stumble Stones has elements of romance, humor, suspense, mystery and intrigue. Set in contemporary and 1940s Europe, it’s about a cache of priceless diamonds hidden in World War II that holds the key to an unsolved mystery and a promise of lost love. It incorporates a lot of my favorite things: Travel—it is set in Rome, Baden, Switzerland, and Berlin, as well as on a Scandinavian cruise. I like to set books where I’ve vacationed and I definitely tap into that in this book. I spent six months in college in Florence, Italy, so that’s one of my favorite settings. At the beginning of the book, the heroine is on her way to Italy, to get away from her ex-husband and spend as much of his money as she can. As a matter of fact, that was the opening line. “Life was better in business class, especially when your cheating ex-husband was paying for it.”

I’m also very interested in World War II and a big portion of the novel flashes back to the Holocaust stories of two women. My father was a top-turret gunner on a B-17 during the war and I’ve always been fascinated by his stories and the journal of his flight missions. Most of the books I read and enjoy are set in World War II. That was the part of the novel I enjoyed researching and writing the most.

I love watching soap operas so I made my heroine, Hallelujah Weiss, a writer for the soap opera As the Planet Spins and most of the chapters in her point of view begin with a soap opera script, revealing the parallels in her life and the life of Polly Winthrop, the character she writes. It is my most serious book to date. It’s a multilayered dark and humorous suspense and I tried to achieve the perfect balance between darkness and light with a hopeful, surprise ending.

HL: What do you do for fun when not writing?

I read. I’m in two book clubs and on the steering committee of an organization that plans and holds a communit ywide book event. I’m never without a book and I enjoy all genres from literary fiction to young adult. Likewise, I write in a variety of genres, from humorous coming-of-middle-age women’s fiction to historical romantic thrillers and romantic suspense, to paranormal/fantasy. To me, reading other authors’ books isn’t a time drain. It helps improve my writing.

HL: When did you start writing?

I wrote my first “novel” called East-West Island when I was in third grade and my teacher read it to the class in installments. All of the characters were kids in my class. I majored in journalism and public relations and minored in creative writing and I have a public relations firm so I wrote for a living before I started writing fiction.

HL: So What comes first: the plot or the characters?

The title. I can’t start a book without a title. Then I have to name my characters. The plot isn’t fleshed out when I start. I am a “pantser,” which means I write by the seat of my pants so the plot develops as I go along. Often, the ending surprises me.

HL: What have you learned about writing since you were published that surprised you the most?

It’s hard work. It takes focus to sit down at the computer and write and revise, rinse and repeat until you get a product you are happy with. When my characters stop talking to me, I know the book is ready. The amount of time it takes to promote a book once it’s released is much more than I ever imagined.

HL: What’s your writing process? Has it changed since writing your first book?

Yes, I used to write longer books and now my books are getting shorter as I get older. I don’t have a set writing schedule. I write when I have time, between writing for clients. I wish I had more time to write.

HL: Do you listen to music when you write and if so, what kind of music – or do you find it distracts you?

I don’t do that much anymore, but when I first started writing I definitely listened to music of the period I was writing about. For Under the Moon Gate, a WW II romantic thriller, I listened to Big Band music and music of the ‘40s, which I love. For Stones, my women’s fiction, I listened to all the songs I grew up with. Music never distracts me.

HL: What is your personal definition of success?

Putting my books out there so I will leave something behind. Having readers tell me they loved one of my books.

HL: What is your favourite source of inspiration?

Inspiration can come from anywhere and everywhere, from anything that sparks your imagination. In fact, ideas can come when you least expect them, and when inspiration strikes, ideas just might come from the heavens.

HL: Is there any advice, as a new writer, that you were either given, or wish you had been given?

Every well-known author I’ve ever met or interviewed has a common piece of advice for new writers and that is—Finish the Book! You can always revise and improve a manuscript, but you can’t fix a blank page.

HL: What sort of research do you do for your books and what’s your favourite source of information?

For my book set in Bermuda during WW II, I did extensive research by reading archived New York and Bermuda newspapers from the 1940s to find out little things like what people ate, what movies they watched, what style of clothes they wore, what things cost, etc., and that helped to give the book dimension and immerse me in the times I was writing about. Thank you so much, Marilyn, it was so interesting to find out more about you - now let's see some more of the book itself.

She is a Georgia Romance Writers (GRW) Maggie Award winner, a PAN member of Romance Writers of America and GRW and winner of the GRW 2009 Chapter Service Award. A public relations consultant in Atlanta, Marilyn graduated with a BS in Journalism and a minor in Creative Writing from the University of Florida. She worked in Public Relations for AT&T in Atlanta for 13 years before starting her own PR firm.
