The RoNAs 2017

A week ago Dave (my hubby) and I had a lovely evening at the Romantic Novelists Association Novel Of the Year Awards. (RoNAs) - a glittering occasion with canapés and bubblies in the Gladstone Library in Whitehall Place, London.

This is the reception area, isn't it amazing!

'Beloved Enemy' was on the shortlist for the Paranormal/Speculative fiction section. (I may have mentioned this before :) ) The other nominees were Christinea Courtenay with 'The Velvet Cloak of Midnight', Jan Jones with 'An Ordinary Gift' and Kate Johnson's 'Max Seventeen.'

I didn't win - the winner was Kate Johnson with her gritty SF novel, 'Max 17' a very worthy winner I might add. I had no expectations of winning, myself, I was just thrilled to be on the shortlist!

The wine was flowing!

Christina Courtenay, Jan Jones, Kate Johnson and myself

What a brilliant evening - this was my first time at a RoNA Awards ceremony and it certainly lived up to expectations!

They don't understand what's happening to them or why, and they're running out of time to sort out the strange occurrences around them.

Their meeting sets an ancient Norse prophesy of destruction in motion, and what destiny has in store for them is bigger than either could have ever imagined. Now her closest friend is dead, and another is missing, forcing Ari to return to face the devastating consequences of her actions and the broken boy she left behind.

Her problems are only just beginning.

Even as her bond with Dace grows stronger, Arionna finds herself weakening when Freki's cage shatters. Fighting the wolf for control is tearing her apart piece by piece. And at every turn, she finds that those she's put her faith in aren't who they seem, bringing her face to face with Sköll and Hati. EXCERPT FROM FLAME
"Arionna, dammit, wake up."

Unseen hands gripped my upper arms, shaking me. A familiar voice called my name over and over. Furious howls ripped through the air.

None of those sounds made sense to me.

I felt different, like I'd been taken apart and put back together in the wrong order. Everything hurt. My body ached, muscles locked tight in protest. My head throbbed. Each painful pulse rattled against my skull, sending ripples down my neck and into my back.

I groaned and rolled onto my side.

The hands shaking me relaxed.

I fought to open my eyes, then blinked, confused. Worn brown carpet scratched against the side of my face. The bottom edge of a pale blue bed-sham fluttered inches from me. Dust bunnies and small pieces of plastic were strewn beneath the sagging bed. A table and two chairs were grouped on the other side. A crack ran up the leg of one chair, splitting the wood.

None of the room looked familiar.

Where am I?

The voice calling my name stopped mid-shout and sighed.

Oh, thank god, he said.

For what? I wondered, marveling that the words came from inside my mind, but didn't belong to me. How was that possible?

I couldn't place the soft, silky tones either, but they made my stomach flip and my heart flutter. I knew the speaker. At least I thought I did. Before I could ask him who he was or how he spoke in my head, someone blew out a sharp breath. This time, the sound didn't come from inside.

"Finally," that second voice said.

Nope. Definitely not coming from my mind.

I rolled my eyes toward the relieved sound, and then frowned at the guy leaning over me. Long, dark hair hung in his face. His eyes were black, and full of concern. His features were sharp, severe, but handsome.

This time I was certain; I knew this guy.

"Ronan," I said. His name was Ronan LaCrosse, and mine was… Arionna. Yes, Arionna Jacobs. Memory began to slowly trickle back in. We were at a motel in Illinois, looking for someone. And the howls were coming from Fuki, the little wolf we'd brought with us, though I couldn't see him.

Where was he?

I tried to figure out why I was on the floor, but came up with a big blank.

"What happened?" I asked, looking up at Ronan.

He held out a hand for me, then pulled me into a sitting position.

The room tilted before straightening again. I clutched my head in my hands, groaning. When the initial wave of nausea passed, I tilted my head up slowly so I could see Ronan. "Did I hit my head?" I asked, trying to blink away the dark spots floating in my peripheral.

"You don't remember?" He narrowed his eyes, tilting his head to the side like a raven assessing me.

I scooted back against the edge of the bed, frowning.

What was I supposed to remember?

Dead Storage - Book Spotlight

I usually post guest posts or cover reveals for SF or fantasy romance, but when I saw this gorgeous dog cover,  I couldn't resist!

DEAD STORAGE
by Mary Feliz

Genre: Cozy Mystery
Pub Date: 7/18/2017

As a professional organizer, Maggie McDonald brings order to messy situations. But when a good friend becomes a murder suspect, surviving the chaos is one tall task . . .
Despite a looming deadline, Maggie thinks she has what it takes to help friends Jason and Stephen unclutter their large Victorian in time for its scheduled renovation. But before she can fill a single bin with unused junk, Jason leaves for Texas on an emergency business trip, Stephen’s injured mastiff limps home—and Stephen himself lands in jail for murder. Someone killed the owner of a local Chinese restaurant and stuffed him in the freezer. Stephen, caught at the crime scene covered in blood, is the number one suspect. Now Maggie must devise a strategy to sort through secrets and set him free—before she’s tossed into permanent storage next . . .

Mary Feliz, author of the Maggie McDonald Mystery series, has lived in five states and two countries. Traveling to other locations, she’s discovered that what seems normal in the high-tech heartland can seem decidedly odd to the rest of the country. A big fan of irony, serendipity, diversity, and quirky intelligence tempered with gentle humor, Mary strives to bring these elements into her writing, although her characters tend to take these elements to a whole new level. She’s a member of Sisters in Crime, Mystery Writers of America, and National Association of Professional Organizers. Mary is a Smith College graduate with a degree in Sociology. She lives in Northern California with her husband, near the homes of their two adult offspring.

Beloved Enemy's Birthday!

Can you believe it's a year since Beloved Enemy was published!
To celebrate I designed a new 'teaser' above to go with these two:

I have to admit I enjoy playing with graphics, so I'll be doing some more for Beloved Enemy when I get some time - but I must finish my current WIP which is a ghost story and a bit of a departure from Science Fiction, but I have some more SFs on the 'back burner'.

I'm looking forward to the RoNa Awards in London on Monday when I'll get to meet the other nominees, including those in my category, Christine Courtenay, Jan Jones and Kate Johnson. I'm a bit nervous as I've never been to a Romance Novelists event before but it should be a lovely, sparkly evening!

I thought I'd share the first chapter of Beloved Enemy with you (It's already on my sidebar but in case you missed it, here's the link):

On the RNA Blog Today...the Paranormal/Speculative Fiction Rona Awards

This year’s shortlisted novels include space adventures, timeslip, and a ghost story, and include two independently published novels. ...

For the first time ever there is a paranormal category.
The other three finalists   in this category are Christine Courtenay, Kate Johnson and Jan Jones and I am so thrilled to be included with such wonderful, talented authors, with the latest in the Destiny Trilogy - Beloved Enemy!

There are five other categories: Contemporary, Epic, Historical, Romantic Comedy and Young Adult, plus the RoNA Rose for shorter fiction. So many wonderful books in the running. The awards will be announced at the RNA  Awards Ceremony on the 13th March  by guest presenter Prue Leith. Although I'm not really expecting to get any further with such great authors in the running, wish me and Kerry and Cat luck!

Here is a brief excerpt from Beloved Enemy

He pulled her back toward him and looked deep into her eyes.Something she saw in those blue depths struck her heart. The pain that never left them went so deep. This man bore scars far worse than the physical one running faintly below his left eye…worse even than the mental scars she harboured herself.

Almost without thinking, she put her hands on each side of his face and pressed her lips to his in a brief kiss, then drew back. For a moment he hesitated, before pulling her close again, so close she gasped. He brushed his thumb along her lips, until she parted them in surrender. A shockwave like electricity ran through her, sending her senses reeling in the ecstasy of the moment. She’d sworn never to let a man betray her again. Every man she’d ever known, even her own father, had let her down, lied to her, and deceived her. Yet at this moment, with this man, every nerve in her body ached with sweet desire.

MARCH 1st - ST DAVID'S DAY

Today is St David's Day, the national Saint's Day for Wales.

People in Wales will be wearing a dafodil or leek and all sorts of celebrations will be taking place, from concerts called Eisteddfords to lunches with a special soup of lamb, leeks and potato, served with bread and cheese and known  as cawl and  in many schools the children will dress up in national costume.

The leek is the symbol of St David but many people, including myself, prefer to wear our national flower, the daffodil, and thanks to our mild winter, I'm happy to say the daffodils in my garden have flowered well in time for the special day, this year!

Happy St David's Day everyone.
