Triskelion

Triskelion
On Wednesday, I'll have the pleasure of being host to Sky Purington.  Sky was one of eight authors, including myself, who each wrote a story about a Greek Muse in The Wild Rose Press series 'Song Of The Muses.'  Sadly these stories are no longer available in print, but are still available for download from The Wild Rose Press.

Sky also wrote about hunky Scots in kilts, but is now writing in a slightly darker vein,  (Find out more on Wednesday)  but as I was preparing her post, I got to thinking about the 'Muse' series and some of the research I'd done for my own particular muse, Terpsichore, in my story for the series 'Dancing with Fate.  I sent her to 5th Century Wales. If you follow my  blog, you will know how much I enjoy finding pictures for my posts, and of course being a Celtic Welsh woman, among some of the pictures I found in my file for the story were Triskelkions and Celtic knots.

Lovespoon
These designs are much used in Celtic jewellery and, of course, the traditional  Welsh carved wooden LoveSpoon.

A triskelion or triskele is a motif consisting of three interlocked spirals, or three bent human legs, or any similar symbol

It represents the concept of completion and progress. The symbol looked like a three legged wheel. There are basically two different components or meanings of the symbol.

According to the first derivation of the meaning, the triskelion, represents actions, cycles, progress, revolution and competition. In all, the triskelion was a representation of a sense of advancement.

The three legs or rather, the limbs of the triskelion often had several different meanings. The symbol was often used on armours, clothes, as a decorative pin for the clothes and also in jewelery. The meaning of the three legs, varied according to the person who was wearing it. Some of the prominent combinations of the meanings, are as follows: 'Spirit, Mind, Body', 'Father, Son, Holy Ghost', 'Mother, Father, Child', 'Past, Present, Future', 'Power, Intellect, Love', 'Creator, Destroyer, Sustainer' and 'Creation, Preservation, Destruction'.

They can also represent The Otherworld: Where spirits, gods and goddesses live, The Mortal World: Where we live, along with plants and animals, and The Celestial World: Where unseen energies live and move about. Like the forces of sun, moon, wind and water.
Celtic knots are perhaps the most notorious and recognizable artwork in Celtic history. They started
      Celtic Knot
appearing in history after about 450 AD.

The Celtic knot symbol, is also referred to as the mystic knot

So - what interesting things have you discovered in your research when writing. Have you unearthed any interesting objects from history or your own heritage?

Thoughts on Promotion by Avril Ashton

I'm very pleased and thrilled to welcome Avril Ashton to my Blog today.  She is one of the founders of 'Wickedly Sexy Writers, a site geared to helping authors get their word out there.  I asked how the site came about. She said "We’re new authors, fresh on the scene, with no viable ways to promote ourselves and our books without spending an arm and a leg. After much brainstorming, and a million emails back and forth, this idea was born. A promotional site for authors, by authors, free of charge." She explained that the site caters for writers of all heat levels, and I must admit I had to fan myself a little after visiting *grin* but I understand that writers of 'sweet' stories would be just as welcome!

A Caribbean transplant, Avril now lives in Brooklyn, N.Y with a Spousal Equivalent of almost eight years. Together they raise a 6 y/o daughter who loves reading and school (wonder how long that will last). Avril’s earliest memories of reading revolve around discussing plot points of The Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew with a very encouraging mother

Always in love with the written words, Avril finally decided to do the writing in August of ’09 and never looked back. Spicy love scenes, delicious heroes, and wicked women burn up the pages of Avril’s stories, but there’ll always be a happy ending; Avril remains a believer of love in all its forms.
Without more ado, I'll let Avril tell you more about the site and what promotion means to her, in her own words.

      Thoughts on Promotion

I freely admit to not even considering the promo aspects of being a writer. That was never on my radar. I figured I just had to write the damn thing. Naïve, I know. My complete and total wake-up call came when I focused on epublishing. I began researching the various epublishers, reviewing their contracts, really decipher the gibberish and understand what they were willing to do as far as promoting authors’ work.

The bulk of promotion remains squarely on the newbie author’s shoulders. A layperson—like myself—who had no idea what the business fully entailed. I felt completely hopeless. What do I do? Where should I even begin with this? Fortunately, this community that we’re in, the writing community, is amazingly helpful. I asked, many authors answered. I got the blogs, the social networking, the yahoo loops. All great. All things I participate in.

Then came the questions about placing my book cover somewhere, my banner. Most places I found on the net cost money. Sure five dollars to have you put my banner on your site sounds cheap, but what if I have to choose between that and sending the money to the offspring’s school for a class trip? Guess which one loses out. And since your site has a high traffic volume, there goes a good promo op. Same thing with the book covers. To have it up on your site for say a month, I pay you what? Twenty-thirty dollars. But this month the offspring’s winter jacket has decided not to zip. Guess where that money is going? And all this is happening in my release month. Good promo op lost. Again.

The idea of WickedlySexyWriters came from these very happenings. I can’t afford to pay, no matter how small it may be. I know there are many out there who can’t. So here we are. Authors helping authors. One week a month is dedicated to covers/blubs and excerpts only. You simply send me your info in an attachment and it goes up that week. We automatically add your banner to our Author Alley with your links. The rest of the month is SexySpotlight; an author gets a week on the site all to themselves. All the works: interviews, guest blog, excerpts and cover and blurb. Yours.

All free. Our only requirement is you post our banner on your websites/blogs. Tell your friends. Mention us on Facebook, twit us on Twitter. We’re pretty small, still growing as far as traffic, but we’re getting there. It’s a lot of work, but it is worth it when an author, new like me says ‘thank you, this is a godsend.’ There are, I’m sure, promo sites out there who don’t cost a thing. I couldn’t find them when I was tearing my hair out wondering what to do, what to do. Still can’t find them.

      Monday's Word - SIDEKICK

As writers, we often introduce a 'sidekick' into our stories.  Even if we're writing romance, the sub genres, mystery, suspense, and especially fantasy or Science Fiction, Western Historicas, often need someone at the hero or heroine's side, to assist them on their quest, and sometimes to provide a little comic relief.  But do you know where the term 'Sidekick' orginated from?  Well, according to Michael Quinion in his 'World Wide Words'

"Scott W Langill recalled a book of the 1930s by a
pickpocket that mentioned this and noted that the side pocket - the side kick - was the hardest pocket to pick and that the slang term for a buddy and its connotation of trustworthiness both came from it. You may judge the etymological insight of the writer from his view that the rear trouser pocket, in pickpockets' slang called the "prat", was the origin of "prat fall".

It's the other way around -"prat", as a slang term for a buttock, dates from about 1560 and the hip-pocket sense is twentieth century. Unfortunately for the tellers of trouser pocket tales, "kick" for a pocket was British slang, not American, whereas the buddy meaning of "sidekick" is definitely from the US.

Others mentioned several specialist uses of "kicker" that might have contributed to its meaning. One is the poker sense of a side card that breaks a tie. Another is the printer's sense of a device that after a set count of pages pushes one slightly to the side so pages can be easily counted or separated into sets.

A third is that the original sidekicks would have ridden horses, encouraged by kicks to their sides, so a sidekick was one who rode alongside you. "

So what do you think, which of the theories would you subscribe to?

Myself, I think all three have something going for them - although as a 'horseperson' I'm not too keen about people 'kicking' their horses sides - a gentle nudge with the heel is all that should be necessary, but that's another topic altogether!

      Monday's word - Courage

A different type of 'Monday's word' today. 'Courage' Not the type of courage we usually think of when writing about our heros or heroines though.  This is not about facing dragons or aliens, villains and bad guys, this is a diffrerent type of courage.

Usually I talk about difficult or obscure words.  But this article I came across can be summed up in the one word 'Courage' or, if you want a few more, 'Determination in the face of almost overwhelming odds.'

Look at the picture on the cover of this book (the Book's in German, so you'd need to understand the language if you purchased it) but when you've registered what you see, read about this remarkable woman and her amazingly co-operative and talented horse here:

      http://horseandman.com/people-and-places/the-determined-bettina-eistel-and-her-very-special-horse-fabuleax-5/

and then read about another remarkable lady, still in her teens.  A young girl who faced battling leukemia with
      amazing fortitude.
      http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/kyralee
Kyra was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) on May 15, 2009 and I've been following her journal here for a while.  This is where I picked up the story about Bettina and her horse.

We who have nothing more to grumble about than the day to day tribulations of modern life, have a great deal to be thankful for, and it makes me very humble when I read about people like these who show so much courage and detemination.

Interview with Braden Knight of Moon Watchers, Second in the Hunter Series by Sandra Cox.

You may remember Sandra Cox  visited my blog to talk about her book 'Sundial' on All Hallows Eve last year? Well I'm thrilled to say she's back again, with a very special guest, to celebrate the release of her latest novel 'Moonwatchers'.  (And isn't that just the most gorgeous and evocatrive cover?) With us today is the mysterious and sexy Braden Knight. Lyn turns to Braden.

“Thank you so much for agreeing to this interview, Braden. I know how you value your privacy.”

Braden: “How could I refuse a request from such a charming woman?” He brings her hand to his lips and kisses it.

Lyn blushes and giggles. “Oh my. I can see how you gained your reputation.” She fans herself.

Braden: “And what reputation might that be?”

HL: “Jolene Sayer, the werewolf hunter, refers to you as hunkalicious.”

      Braden: “Does she now?”

HL: “Oh yes. By the way, where did you meet Ms. Sayer?”

Braden: “She was visiting her cousin Zoe Tempest on Vampire Island.”

HL: “Vampire Island? Where is it? Is it as scary as it sounds?” She shivers dramatically.

Braden: “It’s in the Bahamas and safe enough now, but not too long ago it was a place that I wouldn’t have recommended for humans.”

HL: “Humans? What an odd response.  There are rumors floating around that you’re a vampire. Is that true?” She backs up. The mike in her hand shakes.

      Braden: “What do you think?”

Lyn glances at her watch. “Oh look our times up. Thank you so much for joining us today.”  She makes a slitting motion across her throat for the camera to stop rolling and hurries away.

Braden grins at her retreating figure. “Humans.” He shrugs and leaves the studio.

      Blurb from Moon Watchers:
Some people think being a Were hunter is weird. For me it’s perfectly normal. What I see as odd is my attraction to the hunkalicious Braden Knight. Why? I think he’s a vampire.

      Excerpt:
As the full moon rose above the leafless black trees, an eerie howl shattered the night. I rubbed the goose bumps on my arms and felt the hair on my neck rise. Moonlight fell in shadowy patches across the living room floor of the cottage I’d inherited on my eighteenth birthday, last week to be exact.
Dad’s in Europe, tracking down a tip he got on a Weres pack. That’s how I’ve come to be alone deep in the forests of Minnesota where there is considerable werewolf activity.
I’ve hunted Weres since I was thirteen, but this is the first time I’ve been completely on my own.

A branched tapped against the window. I jumped then shook my head at my nerves. “Geez.” When my heart settled down, I leaned forward and peered out the window. My hand tightened on the long silver knife at my waist. Nothing moved outside. “Get a grip, Jo.”

I took a deep breath and started toward the kitchen. The tapping came again, this time louder. I whirled. It wasn’t the window, it was the door. Someone or something was on the other side.

My legs stiff, my knees locked, I took one slow step after another. My hand wrapped around the knife and tightened till my knuckles turned white. Who could be out at--I glanced at my watch-- ten at night in an isolated corner of the north. I crept through the living room into the tiny foyer.

I took a deep breath and cleared my mind, the way dad taught me. Nerves left me. The cold logic of the warrior set in. Making sure the chain was in place, I cracked the door, ready to slice anything too close to the opening.

      “Hello, Jolene.”

My hand fell to my side. I gaped in astonishment. I removed the latch and stood in the doorway, one hand on the frame, stunned.

“Braden! What are you doing here?” I’d met Braden Knight briefly when I visited my distant cousin Zoe Tempest, vampire hunter extraordinaire. Perhaps you’ve heard of her. If not, I guarantee you will. She’s come to hunting the undead rather late in life--seventeen--but she’s taken to it like a pro, swift, vigilant and tough.
But I’m stalling. I’d felt an attraction for Braden Knight from the first moment I saw his bronzed pecs and thick chestnut hair.

“Zoe told me your dad was in Europe and left you alone in the middle of Nowhere Minnesota. May I come in?”

Damn good question. Zoe had confided her fears to me that the handsome man standing in front of me was of the undead variety. But whether of the pranic--that lives on other people’s energy and aren’t truly undead--or the blood--that survives on warm, red heart fluid--she wasn’t sure.
Zoe’s not even sure he’s a vampire. All she knows is that he has extraordinary powers for a nineteen year old human.

Suddenly, the decision was made for me. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw a huge black wolf rush forward, its lips drawn back in a snarl, its fangs gleaming, its eyes blood red.
Without thought, I jerked Braden inside and slammed the door.

*Shiver*  That's a really chilling excerpt, Sandra, I really want to read this book!  Now she's invited a vampire inot her home - hasn't she? Oh, I need to find out more!

Thank you so much for being my guest today - oh and Braden too, of course.  Gosh, what a hunk! He gives me the shivers - but not in the way hunky men usually do, well yes he does, but he makes me a little nervous as well!  Congratulations on your release, Sandra, may it sell many, many copies!

Oh, before you leave, I understand you have a contest running.  Here are the details

      Weird Words: Tintamarre

I hope everyone who celebrates Christmas had a lovely one, and that you will all have a Happy, Healthy and productive if not necessarily prosperous 2011.

I've had a break from Monday's Word, with so much going on over the last few weeks, so thanks for your patience if you've been waitiing for its return!

We start the New Year with TINTAMARRE, which as Michael Quinion* says

"It is a pleasant word for an unlovely experience, unless you are a lover of loud noises, since a tintamarre is an uproar, hubbub or confused noise...

...While we're sure that it was borrowed from French in the sixteenth century, nobody has provided a good explanation of where the French got it from. It may remind us of "tintinnabulation" but the experts are sure that the two words aren't connected.

At one time, it was fairly common in English but it almost died out in the nineteenth century. J Redding Ware recorded in his Passing

English of the Victorian Era in 1909 that it was confined to Devon.

Since then it has become even rarer in English, though it has been resurrected, hopefully teasingly, for a music festival in Lincolnshire.

The French connection survives in the Acadian regions of eastern Canada. A tintamarre is a colourful parade in which participants see how much din they can create using any noisemaker to hand, such as pots, pans, whistles or drums. This event is only about 30 years old (one website calls it a modern tradition) but may reflect the old French custom of charivari."

So, another one to file away for when your Hero and Heroine are finding it difficult to get together because of the external 'tintamarre' LOL!
