Hello fellow Snippeteers and readers. Welcome to my Weekend Warriors post. I'm continuing this week with another snippet from my fantasy novella, Dancing With Fate. Thank you to everyone who's been following my snippets so far.
Don't forget to visit the other authors at the link above, there's something for all tastes.
Last time:
Terpsichore, muse of dance, has just met Myrddin. He tries to persuade her to travel with him, unaware that she is a muse, and should be returning to Olympus. She is equally unaware that her brother, the god Apollo, has other plans for her. This is a little further than last week's snippet which you can read HERE)
'Sal' the horse in this story, is based on my little buckskin mare Sal, who sadly went to the Rainbow Bridge a few years ago after being a loyal friend for many years. The picture was made for me by Masha Holl, a 'sister muse' from the anthology in which'Dancing With Fate' was originally published,

She found it difficult to refuse when he looked at her like that. All at once, she had a deep desire to get to know him better.
"That sounds good," she said, "I am a little hungry."
"You have a horse?"
Before Terpsichore could answer, a soft whinny came from behind a clump of bushes.
A pretty, creamy-gold mare, with a black mane and tail and four black stockings trotted up to her. A white star graced her forehead as she tossed back her forelock and stood with one foreleg raised, I am Sal.

I wonder if this meeting was planned by Apollo, or if Myrddin with thwart his plans.
ReplyDeleteApollo and Zeus between them have indeed planned this meeting - there's far more at stake than either Terpsichore or Myrddin realise at the moment!
DeleteKnowing the history of the the real Sal makes this snippet even more meaningful.
ReplyDeleteThanks Ed. The real Sal was a very special horse and I miss her - we travelled a lot of miles together!
DeleteLove the mare introducing herself.
ReplyDeleteThanks P T!
DeleteI love Sal already- so sweet!
ReplyDeleteThanks Christina, glad you like her, the real Sal was a sweetheart - very affectionate, although she could also be very feisty and was a real character, with a heart like a lion!
DeleteLovely introduction.
ReplyDeleteOnce again, a winner of a story. Thanks, Hywela.
DeleteThanks Jess!Aw, thank you, Charmaine!
DeleteVery nice and clear description of Sal. I love that she introduces herself.
ReplyDeleteIs Sal a gift from Apollo? She sounds a pretty horse. I used a spotted male mule as the model for the sarcastic mare in my story Super Starrella.
ReplyDeleteYou're right Aurora, she is from Apollo - he did promise her a mode of transport, and Sal is special, although she'd have liked Pegasus! Your spotted mule sounds fascinating, I'll have to look up 'Super Strella'!
DeleteIs a horse introducing itself going to freak him out? I think I would be.
ReplyDeleteHi Nancy - no actually only Terpsichore can hear her - but Myrddin wouldn't hav been freaked out anyway - he's quite used to talking to the animals himself! :)
DeleteAwwww, this is so sweet :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Siren x
DeleteOh, I LOVE the horse appearing like that! Really a fun story (so far, of course you may have some big plot twists in store for us) - great snippet!
ReplyDeleteThanks Veronica - yes there are a few plot twists, and the main one is at the end - most people who've got back to me on it said they didn't see it coming!
DeleteThis is such a delightful story. I love that Sal talks.
ReplyDeleteThanks Diane, yes, Sal is a talented little horse! :)
DeleteI do like the way the horse did an enter stage left move! :-) I thin she should stick with this guy for a while. Much safer than being alone. :-)
ReplyDeleteI think you're right Teresa! :)
DeleteWell that was convenient! :D
ReplyDeleteIt was - but it wasn't actually a convenience - Apollo is keeping a close watch on things! :)
DeleteWas that horse eavesdropping? And Sal, real and fictional, sounds beautiful. They never stay long enough.
ReplyDeleteYou're right Caitlin, they really don't stay long enough, although the real Sal was 34 when she went over the Rainbow Bridge, so she had a long life for a horse. I was so pleased I could immortalise her in a story.
DeleteLove the introduction.
ReplyDeleteThanks Karen!
DeleteQuite the entrance- Sal is a great character. I look forward to reading more about their journey together.
ReplyDeleteThanks Alexis. I was actually thinking of finishing with the next excerpt, but folks seem to be enjoying this, so I might carry on a bit longer! (I won't be around much at the weekend so I'll skip next week's 'hop' but will try and visit as many of the snippes as I can during the week.
