Weekend Writing Warriors Snippet Sunday - a new beginning for Megan

Continuing snippets from the draft of my unpublished fantasy novel 'The Matchmaker's Mare which takes place in Wales. The  story is told from three p.o.vs. and two time-lines. Today's excerpt is  from  Megan's p.o.v. and takes place in the present. She has just inherited Ty Gwyn cottage from her uncle, unaware of the legend that surrounds it. If you've been following the story so far, I'm sure you can  guess who once lived in the cottage.

Don't forget to visit the other authors at the link below the excerpt, there's something for all tastes.

I apologise for this not going up last week, I'd been away and pre-scheduled it and somehow missed that it hadn't posted. I'd also intended to visit the other snippets but didn't manage it as things have been a bit hectic. Will try to do better this week, although as always it may be late Sunday/Monday before I get around to visiting folks.

Here's a picture of me and Choccy Dog at the war memorial in Norfolk which we visited while we were away. As you can see from the fact my hair is at 'a quarter to three' it was a bit windy!

Snippet:

A faint scent of lavender drifted toward Megan on the warm, silky breeze, although it was still only early March, and she sniffed appreciatively.

I’ll have to check out the back garden as soon as I’ve settled in

There must be lavender bushes at the back of the cottage, since she couldn’t see any at the front, which was rather overgrown and neglected.

As she inserted the key in the door, she fancied she heard the tinkle of little bells and looked around to see if there was anything in the trees to account for the sound. Perhaps it was garden chimes, but her uncle hadn’t been the type to have such fripperies as he would have called them, and she didn’t think there were any other houses close enough for the sound to carry. She must be imagining things.
She took a deep breath and stepped into the cottage. A new home, a new job and a new beginning. A chance to put behind her the events of the last twelve months and start afresh.

If you would like one, or all three, just let me know with your email address at Lyn@hywelalyn.co.uk and I'll send you the ones you request, (Each book has its own code). If could manage to post a short review after you've listened, that would be greatly appreciated. 😍

  1. It all sounds very homey. I suspect, though, that her fresh start might not be as easy as she'd wish.

    1. Thanks Ed - I suspect that too. Let's hope so, or there might not be much of a story! :)

  2. Love the hair, the Choccy Dog. Envious of your visit to Norfolk. With a disabled husband, it is hard to know you will never be able to visit places again, but there are memories. A new home, a new beginning, makes me want to read on.

    1. Thanks so much - yes, it was a lovely few days in Norfolk, courtesy of a kind friend who has a chalet there, and it's a really nice dog-friendly place too, so Choccy was very happy. Thanks so much! Sorry to hear you're not able to go away now, but as you say, there are always memories. We don't manage to get away very often either, so when we do we take loads of photographs.

  3. Nice tease (I could smell the lavender!). Sounds like the perfect place . . . or is it too good to be true?

    1. Thanks Nancy. It's a lovely place, but thing might not go quite as she expects.

  4. A lovely cottage, although the one in the picture is not so small.

    1. Hi Aurora. Yes, it's a decent size but old Welsh cottages tend to be smaller inside than they look!

  5. A beauty of the house. So sweet and delightful.

    1. Thanks Charmaine. In the story, the cottage is loosely based on my dear late Mam-in-law's cottage in Wales

  7. My first thought was that it sounds too good to be true. I hope she'll find peace there.

  8. I think things aren't going to be as peaceful and calm as she believes. Those chimes ere not in her imagination, I'd be willing to wager.

  9. You might well win your wager, Jenna! :)

  10. The smell of lavender and the sound of chimes makes me think a bit a magic is afoot.

  11. You've hit the nail on the head, Karen! Glad my bit of 'foreshadowing' came across.

  12. Wonderful beginning to her new life.

I'm glad that Choccy got a vacation too! And I laughed when I read your comment about your hair! I'd never before heard that reference before when describing windblown hair, but when I enlarged your photo, it made perfect sense!

BTW, you look lovely in that photo!

  13. Aw thanks for the lovely comment, Teresa. LOL, I sometimes use the 'quarter to three' comment to describe Choccy's ears too, when he's listening intently and holds them out straight at each side! Yes, it was lovely to be able to take Choccy with us. We stayed at a dear friend's holiday chalet near the beach, and the village is very 'dog friendly' which meant we could take him with us wherever we went.
