Hi folks,

I'm continuing snippets from the draft of my current 'work in progress' unpublished fantasy romance 'The Matchmaker's Mare' which takes place in Wales. The  story is told from three p.o.vs. and two time-lines. Today's excerpt is again from Megan's P.O.V.

She has dropped by Glyn Phillips' farm in time to see his son, Huw, riding the strange pony that mysteriously appeared in one of his paddocks, and seemed to be unrideable. Skipping ahead a few pages, Glyn takes her into the kitchen to see how his old dog is doing, and the younger dog jumps up at her,
almost knocking her over.

SNIPPET

“I'm so sorry, I try to stop him jumping up at people - he’s only young, as I said, and he gets over excited.”

“It’s okay,” she said with a grin, giving the collie a hug, “I love dogs. We always had dogs when I was a child and I really miss having one now.”

“You should get one then, there are plenty in the rehoming centre looking for a good home. I wouldn’t be without a dog, myself.”

“Oh, I’d love to,” she said, giving a little sigh, but it wouldn’t really be fair, since I’m at work a lot of the day. I’m thinking about getting a cat from the rescue centre though, although I’m really more of a dog person really. Perhaps one day, if I come into money and can retire…”

Glyn chuckled softly. “Sometimes if we want something enough we can find a way to make it happen.”

Hmm, the man was a philosopher too, as well as devilishly handsome. She’d have to watch herself. It would be easy to fall for his gentle manners and good looks, and she wasn’t ready to commit to another relationship yet. It was rather satisfying to be completely independent, and to be able to organise her life to suit herself without having to consider someone else’s arrangements. Besides, she’d fancied herself in love once before and had her feelings and her trust betrayed. She wasn’t about to allow it to happen again.

(This is only a rough draft to give the gist of the novel, and is subject to change and edits - and improvement on the creative punctuation which is needed  to adhere to the ten sentence rule!) Any feedback gratefully received.

  1. So much conflict inside of her. SHe's going to be a tough nut to crack when it comes to love.

I LOVE collies! My old Border collie mix, Pokey, was almost 16 at life's end. So intelligent, so loving. Almost 10 years he's been gone, and I still think about him almost everyday...

We have technical issues on the wewriwa site, so we're using the backup page--wewriwa.blogspot.com :-)

  2. Yes, Megan's got a view issues she needs to get over, but she's got a lot to give. Yes, collies are lovely, Pokey was a good age, but we do miss our furbabies so much, don't we. Thanks for the link - I knew there was a problem when I tried to sign up, so I've changed the link on the post now, and signed up on the blog.

  3. For a rough draft, this is really excellent. It doesn't seem like it needs much work at all.

    1. Aw Ed, thank you SO much, that means a lot coming from you, and gives me confidence to get the darn thing finished! :)

    1. Thanks Charmaine, what a lovely comment, I'm glad you liked the snippet.

  5. I like your characters already! One who blatantly loves dogs . . . one who loves dogs but is sensible . . . sounds like my husband and me! (Oh . . . and we have an incredible houseful of shedding rescue pets, four dogs and one warrior tom!) Great snippet!

    1. Thnks Sara - yes they're both animal lovers, and are a good balance for each other. Rescues are so forgiving and loving, I have a rescue terrier and a horse - and a rescued 'feral' cat who sleeps on the yard owner's bed!

  6. I can understand her cautious interest.
Our first dog was a collie and a "one-man" dog. If my husband was away, I suddenly became the focus of doggie attention or possibly 'alpha'.

    1. LOL Aurora, my dog is the opposite, he sticks to me like glue, but if I have to go out, he looks to my husband as the 'second' in the pecking order! :)

  7. A pleasant, easy flowing conversation, which also reveals a lot about both characters! Enjoyed the snippet!

  8. I really love that she's willing to get a cat even if she's a dog person. That she desires to help any rescue animal speaks very well of her character.

  9. How can she resist a devilishly handsome man. :)
    Great snippet. Flowed perfectly.

    1. Thanks Karen. He is rather gorgeous, but she's been hurt before, so is finding it hard to trust.

  10. I'm a dog-person, too. Understandable why she's reluctant to get one now.

  11. Yes, not good for a dog to be left alone most of the day, but she'd really love to have one of her own.

  12. Great snippet. I love that she likes being independent.

    Keep smiling,

  13. Thanks Yawatta - yes she does - but who knows what lies ahead!:)

  14. I love that she's sensible enough to consider if her current position would be fair on a pupper. A true animal lover.

I'm more of a cat person, but we've two border collies in our house. Both at least five years old and still quite boisterous (and intent on burying us in hair, I'm sure XD).

  15. Thanks Aldrea - yes she loves animals and knows it wouldn't be fair to have a dog in her present circumstances. Isn't it interesting how many people are either cat or dog persons though. I don't dislike cats at all, but wouldn't want to be without a dog. My little 'rescue' is a terrier, and thankfully doesn't shed very much, although of course we'd still love him if he did. Love border collies too and the dog in this snippet is a border.
