Highway Cafe Christmas Blog tour

Hi, Merry Christmas - and welcome to the Highway Cafe Christmas Blog Hop!
(Well, I know it's not actually Christmas yet, but Santa has us reciting those words so often it's become something of a habit!) And actually Christmas is just around the corner and for Santa's elves it's a very, very, very busy time! Oh, I'm Lindy Lou by the way, and my job here at the North pole is putting the manes and tales on rocking horses and brushing them until they're really silky and shiny. I love my job because I've always loved horses and even though these aren't real, you never know if a bit of magical elven dust might bring them to life!

I always have the Nutcracker Suite playing in the background as I work - it's so Christmassy and gets me in the mood! Of course it's hungry work, so I have the occasional snack of Christmas fruit cake, washed down with Christmas mead to keep me going. The time flies and before I know it, it's Christmas and Santa is chuckling away, encouraging us to get all the toys loaded on his sleigh.

Oh, Santa doesn't get to be the only one delivering gifts either.  We're all 'Secret Santas' and have a gift for one of the other elves.  This year my gift is a sack of special carrots and apples for the reindeer, and a big box of chocolates and cookies for Taleisin Elafir, who does such a good job of caring for the reindeer.  I'd also like to give her a free copy of 'Dancing With Fate' if she'd care to take a moment from feeding the reindeer, to pop in and say hello.

I thought you might like a couple of Christmas decorating ideas.  In my little cottage at the North Pole, I love, love, love decorating for Christmas.  Here's one of my windows, and I cover the sill with white artificial snow (cotton wool will do) and throw on a little sparkle.  Next I get all my Christmas woodland animals, some little model houses and Christmas  dolls, angels and a Post Box I was given a few years ago.  I trim the window with coloured fairy lights and edge the display with gold tinsel and some clear fairy lights. In between I dot some pine cones, which I sprayed with with splashes of white paint to look like they're edged with snow. Of course any Christmassy ornaments can be used, they don't have to be the same as mine, just let your imagination run riot!
Another thing I like to do is create a 'teddy bear grotto.  I have a collection of tiny teddy bear figures. I keep them in a glass fronted curio cabinet with a deep display shelf underneath.  At Christmas I cover this shelf with a large sheet of white card and sprinkle it with that sparkly fake snow stuff you can buy in packets. I place a piece of white tinsel all around to keep the 'snow' in place. Then I just place some of my little teddies in the snow and let them play. Again, you could use any small Christmas figures and any alcove or spare bookshelf, It would also work well for a nativity scene.
Just a couple of easy decorating ideas, I'm sure you'll find lots more - and some recipes - on the other elves Blogs so be sure to visit them all. They're listed at the bottom of this page.

Oh - and before you go I'm offering a free copy of either Starquest or my fantasy novella  Dancing With Fate to a randomly drawn commenter on this page. Good Luck!

BELOVED ENEMY (Book3 of the Destiny Trilogy)
What if you had sworn to kill the man responsible for the death of your sister but found yourself falling in love with him instead?

BLURB
Cat Kincaid is obsessed with killing the man she believes is responsible for the torture and death of her sister, but when she eventually catches up with him, survival becomes a greater priority than revenge.

Kerry Marchant, haunted by memories, regret, and self-blame, shields himself from the pain of the past by committing himself totally to the starship, Destiny, of which he is part owner. However, the beautiful, red-haired woman who reminds him of his lost love, and who he suspects is working for a corrupt regime, represents a possible threat not only to the ship, but to his heart.

Marooned on an inhospitable planet, they need to work together to stay alive, fighting not only unknown assailants, but their growing attraction. But how can they learn to trust each other when he has vowed never to get close to a woman again, and she made a solemn pledge to destroy him?

Mondays Musings

I'm not one of those people who likes to start Christmas in November, we usually don't put our decorations up until at least two weeks before Christmas, but we did visit our local garden centre at the weekend,

and it was looking very festive and cheery with model reindeer, lifelike deer and woodland animals that move realistically, Christmas trees, and lots of decorations and ornaments, as well as 'real' Christmas trees for sale, and Christmas plants and gifts.  It made a nice change from the miserable weather, anyway!

Hello from a rather damp grey and miserable Britain!  I hope December has some of those lovely dry crisp and frosty days, especially with Christmas approaching.
I verified my wordcount at 50,260 words for National Novel Writing Month   (My 'Winners' badge is in the sidebar to prove it!) My novel is provisionally called 'Spooked' although this might change.  This is the rough cover I made  for inspiration, and as you might gather it is a 'horsey' story, but that's all I'm saying at the moment. It's very, very rough. I hope to add some more words before NaNo officially finishes, but there will be an awful lot of revision needed before it's fit to be seen.  That's what I love about NaNo though, it compels one to keep writing and make sure that pesky 'internal editor' stays locked up while you get the story down!  It was only ever going to be a short novel, so I won't need much in the way of extra words, but I'm probably going to cut a lot and do a fair bit of substituting 'bad' sentences for better ones (I hope)

It is the final day of my Publisher The Wild Rose Press's special Thanksgiving Discount - they are offering 40% off all digital releases in their entire catalogue - and that includes mine, so if you haven't read 'Starquest' or 'Children Of The Mist' yet, now is your chance to get them at a bargain rate, before the third in the trilogy -'Beloved Enemy' - is released. (I'm still waiting for the release date but will let you know as soon as I know myself.) Nicky Wells Rock and Roll Promo Christmas Party and Review

Nicky’s Rock and Roll Xmas Promo Party!

20th December 2014!

Fairy Tale in New York by Nicky Wells

New York. A restaurant near Park Avenue. It’s early evening, and dusk is falling. So is the snow. Jude and Carrie are only killing time while they wait for their flight to London. They don’t know yet that their life will never be the same.

When rock star Jude gets stranded in New York with his family on Christmas Eve, he has no idea that he is setting in motion a chain of events that will turn their Christmas into the most magical one yet…

No good deed goes unpunished, or so it seems to Jude and Carrie on the morning of the twenty-fourth of December. The previous day, they gave up their London-bound flights to someone in crisis. And now, a spectacular whiteout is grounding all planes, and Jude, Carrie, and baby Maya are stuck far from home.

Tired, hungry, and just a little panicked, Jude loads his family into a cab and returns to their hotel. But there’s no room at the inn, and not even a platinum credit card will make a difference. Snow is falling heavily, and the family is facing a very bleak night indeed.

How do you celebrate Christmas with no place to stay, no food, and no presents? Join Jude, Carrie, Maya and a cast of colourful characters in this fairy tale story of Yuletide in New York.

Fairy Tale in New York is now available in Kindle and paperback editions from all Amazon domains, including: Amazon.co.uk | Amazon.com

I've just read this story and enjoyed every moment of it!  It's a delightful short novel envoking the true spirit of Christmas. Although I hadn't read the first book - 'Spirits of Christmas' I soon felt as if I knew the main characters and empathised with them as they faced a bleak first Christmas together, thousands of miles away from their families in the UK and without even the prospect of a roof over their heads - and all because they gave up their plane seats to someone in need.  As the story develops we meet other warm hearted characters and although their first Christmas together may not have worked out exactly as they imagined, Jude and Carrie and little Maya find no shortage of love and Christmas magic during their unplanned Christmas in New York.

Fairy Tale in New York is a delightful, quick read, ideal for reading over the Christmas period, and I now have to treat myself to the first book 'Spirits Of Christmas' to find out how the original fairytale started.

Spirits of Christmas: A Rock’n’Roll Christmas Carol
At one time, up-and-coming rock singer Jude had it all: a great band, a platinum record, a loving girlfriend. This Christmas, however, he is well down the road towards spontaneous self-destruction.

Unwitting at first, Jude has progressively alienated his band and driven away the love of his life. Tonight, the night before Christmas Eve, he has broken the final taboo during a disastrous gig. Yet Jude doesn’t see how badly his life has derailed, not until a ghostly procession of legends passes through his bedroom with a series of vivid and powerful wake-up calls.

Will the Spirits help Jude put the friendship, love, and rock music back into his Christmas?

Spirits of Christmas is a modern-day rock’n’roll adaption of Charles Dickens’ classic A Christmas Carol. This novella will enchant romance readers, rock lovers, fans of ghost stories, and everybody who adores the festive season.

An Amish Christmas Quilt
by Charlotte Hubbard, Kelly Long, Jennifer Beckstrand

BLURB:

A Willow Ridge Christmas Pageant

Seth Brenneman didn’t expect his holiday would include rescuing pregnant young Mary Kaffman and her two children…or having unexpected feelings for the still-grieving widow. But when they must play the leads in an impromptu live Nativity pageant to help his Amish community, will their roles reveal their hearts—and work a miracle for a lifetime?

A Perfect Amish Christmas

Anna and Felty Helmuth’s grandson, Gideon, plans to spend Christmas on a beach in sunny Mexico. But Anna is quite sure he’d rather be with them, snowshoeing, ice fishing—falling in love. And she knows the perfect girl. Not only is Dottie Schrock an excellent quilter and baker, she’s having a party. There’s just one complication—Gideon is not invited. Dottie has her reasons, but Anna trusts that the spirit of Christmas—and true love-will change her mind, and her future …

EXCERPT
A Willow Ridge Christmas Pageant

“Are we ready? I think our Nativity’s going to be a huge success, with such a heavenly little angel and a regal king,” Rebecca said as she grinned at each of the kids. “And how’s our main attraction?”

Emmanuel, cradled in Mary’s arms, wiggled when Rebecca smiled down at him.

“He’s been fed and changed, so he’s ready,” Mary replied. She smiled at the little parade walking up the Hooleys’ lane. “And here come our shepherds and the other wise men and angels. Everybody looks really gut, Rebecca. We couldn’t have done this without your help.”

As Rebecca murmured something in reply, Mary lost track of it. A tall, broad-shouldered man in a flowing brick-red tunic was striding up the lane toward her, and while she couldn’t see his eyes, she sensed Seth was looking right at her . . . just as she was gazing at him. Thank you for this night, Lord, as we celebrate the birth of Your son and the beginning of our new life in Willow Ridge, Mary prayed quickly. Help me be your faithful handmaiden, as the Virgin Mary was so long ago.

“Let’s hope this works the way I envisioned it,” Rebecca said as other folks began to gather from around town.

Mary turned just in time to see a star-shaped balloon rise into the air, on a long ribbon tied to the light post—and when Rebecca turned on the second lantern, which was aimed skyward, the star glowed and sparkled. Miriam, Ben, Bishop Tom, and the Zook family all let out a delighted oh!

“Folks will be able to see that from quite a ways off!” Tom said. His face shone with boyish wonder as he gazed raptly at the shimmering star above them.

Charlotte Hubbard

Many moons ago—like, in 1983 while I was still a school librarian—I sold my first story to True Story magazine. This launched me into writing about seventy of those “true confessions” stories over the years, and I’ve been a slave to my overactive imagination ever since. My stories invariably take on a life of their own, different from the way I’ve proposed them: I love it when unforeseen characters and plot twists come along, because they keep me guessing right along with my readers!

I love touring historic homes, trying new recipes, crocheting, and playing with my border collie Ramona—although it’s humbling, having a dog smarter than I am! I’m an ordained Presbyterian deacon, and I devote a lot of time to singing in my church choir and to practicing/performing with our percussion ensemble. I’m celebrating more than thirty-five years with my husband, who—bless him—has never once suggested I get a real job!

MY REVIEW

I had a wonderful holiday in Pennsylvania and Ohio last year, and stayed in Amish country. I was fascinated by the glimpses of Amish life I saw, harking back to earlier, gentler times, with a voluntary lack of modern tools technology and convenience,  and their dedication to God. These three stories reflect these ideals and also subtly bring across the true message of Christmas.

I thought each of the three stories in turn was my 'favourite' but in truth, by the time I'd finished the book I realised the three were so different, although linked together by the common theme of a 'Christmas Quilt' that it was quite impossible for me to choose between them. They each bring something special and delightful to the theme, each quilt serving its own unique purpose in the plot, and each story is a lovely illustration of the true meaning of Christmas.

The first story, 'A Willow Ridge Pageant',by Charlotte Hubbard, is rich in symbolism and the story begins with the main character, Mary, a young, pregnant widow, nearing the final stages of labour and stranded in a buggy in the snow with her two stepchildren. The relationship between Mary and her stepchildren is really touching, as are the feelings Seth has for Mary and her new baby, whose arrival into the world he helps bring about, and a gentle romance between  Mary, and Seth the carpenter gradually develops throughout the tale. The climax, featuring a Christmas pageant of the Nativity story, brings about a reconciliation, and hope for a new future.

'A Christmas On Ice Mountain' by Kelly Long has a haunting 'Romeo and Juliet' quality. Two former best friends, John  and Luke, have turned into lifelong rivals, and not spoken for years, although none of their family or friends  really know what their quarrel was about. However, their children, Laurel and Matthew fall in love despite their fathers' enmity, and conduct their romance in secret, desperate to marry, but unsure how to gain permission to do so. The matter is resolved in a way neither of them could have anticipated, and there is a final twist when the reason for the two men's quarrel is discovered and they realise that twenty five years of bitterness could have been avoided. Christmas is a time for forgiveness and healing.

The third story ' A Perfect Christmas' by Jennifer Beckstrand, features  grandparents Anna and Felty Helmuths. Anna is determined to bring her grandson, Gideon and Dottie Schrock togther in what she sees to be the perfect match. However, all Dottie cares about is organising the perfect Christmas for her mother, who is recuperating from cancer. She carefully plans for the Christmas celebrations and organises a party, to which Gideon is not invited. When all her carefully laid plans go awry, Dottie comes to realise that a perfect Christmas is not about perfectly folded napkins, beautifully iced cream horns, or even the lovely Christmas quilt for her mother that she has been so painstakingly working on, but is about the Christchild, family - and love;

This anthology of three delightful and heartwarming stories is perfect for getting into the Christmas spirit and reminding us of the Holy First Christmas, and would make an ideal Christmas gift.

Christmas at Dogtown - Bewitching Book Tour and Review

Christmas in Dogtown
Suzanne Johnson

Genre: Sweet Paranormal Romance

Publisher: Story Vault

Date of Publication: December 2012
Number of pages: 30
Word Count: approx. 11,000
ASIN: B009RBKTSG

Amazon   Barnes and Noble

Book Description:

A woman who spent years escaping her rural past learns that Dogtown, Louisiana, hides more family secrets than just the recipe for boudin blanc…..

Resa Madere’s on the verge of losing it all. The boyfriend’s gone. The job’s history. Her beloved house is on the brink of foreclosure. She’ll do anything to save it—even spend a long Christmas holiday working in St. James Parish, Louisiana, helping her uncle run the family meat business. But the community of Dogtown, which has been home for seven generations of the Madere and Caillou families, has deep roots and deeper secrets. For Resa, going home is one thing.

Getting out might not be so easy.

Short Excerpt:

“You are stupid,” Resa told her reflection in the tiny, scratched mirror of the White Castle’s rose-pink bathroom. “Stupid, ridiculous, and absurd.”

She’d been wrestling with her curly black hair for a half hour, and the brown eyes that stared back at her from beneath freshly plucked brows and carefully applied eyeliner looked more jittery than sexy. “And idiotic.”

First, it had been almost a week since Chan had asked her to the Saturday night community dance, popping the question almost shyly as they hacked at the bodies of gigantic dead fish. They’d both been covered in blood and smelled like they’d been rolling in bait, which should have tipped her off that anything in Dogtown reeking of romance, well, reeked.

Second, her potential date had left immediately after asking her out so he could catch an alligator that had eaten somebody’s poodle in one of those backwater houses near the swamp. He burned rubber out of the Madere’s driveway after making sure he had enough duct tape to wrap around the gator’s jaws. Adequate duct tape was not an attribute she’d ever sought in a man.

REVIEW
This is an unusual short Christmas story with a neat twist. Resa is going home for Christmas, but is not as excited at the prospect as one might expect. She has been trying to 'better' herself and escape from her rural,Louisiana bayou roots. With sheer hard work and determination she almost made it, but a run of bad luck, including losing her job and her rich boyfriend means she now has to make the trek back to her little hometown to work for her beloved uncle in order to earn enough money over Christmas to try to salvage something from the dire situation she now finds herself in.

To make matters worse, the boy her family has been trying to pair her up with since childhood, Chandler Caillou, has returned from a good job in Baton Rouge, to 'wrestle alligators'. Despite her determination to avoid him at all costs, Resa  and Chan are inevitably thrown together and she discovers he has not only changed and matured since she last saw him but has hidden qualities she never  appreciated before.

The author's vivid descriptions of the location and customs are beautifully written and really drew me into the story. There are subtle hints of the supernatural throughout the story, but these are not fully revealed until near the end. The climax is a cleverly worked surprise and in the true Christmas spirit, the story leaves the reader feeling that  what is really important in life is commitment to ones family, and a sense of belonging. The sweet romance running through the story is not overstated but hints at future developments, and  this quick read is a great story to read over Christmas, although it would be enjoyable at any time of the year.

About the Author:

Suzanne Johnson writes urban fantasy and paranormal romance (under the name

Susannah Sandlin) from Auburn, Alabama, on top of a career in educational publishing that has thus far spanned five states and six universities—including both Alabama and Auburn, which makes her bilingual. She grew up in Winfield, Alabama, halfway between the Bear Bryant Museum and Elvis' birthplace, but was also a longtime resident of New Orleans, so she has a highly refined sense of the absurd and an ingrained love of SEC football, cheap Mardi Gras trinkets, and fried gator on a stick. She’s the author of the Sentinels of New Orleans urban fantasy series and, as Susannah Sandlin, the Penton Legacy paranormal romance series.
