BOOK SYNOPSIS

Vengeance was the only burial gift he could bestow.
When Angli cattle thieves slaughter his wife and son, Dwras son of Gwyn vows revenge upon their murderers. But how can a mere farmer prevail against ruthless, trained warriors? For the answer Dwras must look not to his sword, but within his heart.

At 5,000 words, this is a quick, and equally fast-moving read. Told from two viewpoints, that of the protagonist and the antagonist. There is a fairly brief mention of Arthur, but the main protagonist is Dwras.  After seeing his wife and baby son brutally slaughtered all he wants is revenge, but as a simple farmer, he does not have either the skill or weapons to fight the evil marauders.

Being Welsh myself, and proud of my Celtic heritage, I could relate to the characters and incidents in this story.  The descriptive passages are well written and the scenes unfolded before me like a film. I would have liked a little more of 'the Pendragon' being also keenly interested in the Arthurian legends, but then this is the tale of Dwras and his quest for revenge. He learns to wield a sword in the service of Arthur and is finally ready to wreak vengeance on those who murdered his family.  The climax is bloody and thrilling with a  fairly predictable twist, but this is, in itself, a satisfying conclusion and means the character has changed and developed considerably from the person he was at the start.. I enjoyed this short read and would like to read more of Kim Iverson's work.

EXCERPT

Dwras jabbed the offending warrior on the shoulder. With a grunt, the man swung his head around to fix narrow eyes upon him.
“What d’ye want?”
“My seat. I want it back.” Dwras lowered his eyebrows. “Now!”
“You—what?” The Lothian warrior’s laughter nearly made him choke. A grinning companion slapped his back.
“Oho, Farmer Dwras thinks he’s one of us, lads,” chortled another warrior, making a shooing motion. “Be off with you! Back to your pigs, farmer boy.”
They burst into cackles, hoots, and hog calls. Dwras felt his cheeks flush.
The warrior in Dwras’s seat found himself buried under sops and ale.
“My mistake, sir.” He grinned devilishly. “I thought this was the sty.”

AUTHOR BIO

Mornings Journey - Author PhotoKim Headlee lives on a farm in southwestern Virginia with her family, cats, goats, Great Pyrenees goat guards, and assorted wildlife. People and creatures come and go, but the cave and the 250-year-old house ruins—the latter having been occupied as recently as the mid-twentieth century—seem to be sticking around for a while yet.
Kim is a Seattle native and a direct descendent of twentieth-century Russian nobility. Her grandmother was a childhood friend of the doomed Grand Duchess Anastasia, and the romantic yet tragic story of how Lydia escaped Communist Russia with the aid of her American husband will most certainly one day fuel one of Kim’s novels. Another novel in the queue will involve her husband’s ancestor, the seventh-century proto-Viking king of the Swedish colony in Russia.
For the time being, however, Kim has plenty of work to do in creating her projected 8-book Arthurian series, The Dragon’s Dove Chronicles, and other novels under her imprint, Pendragon Cove Press. She has been a published novelist since 1999, beginning with the original editions of Dawnflight (Sonnet Books, Simon & Schuster, ISBN 0671020412) and Liberty (writing as Kimberly Iverson, HQN Books, Harlequin, ISBN 0373771347).

Sunrise Over Brasov - Blog Tour, Giveaway and review

Sunrise Over Brasov
by Stephanie Burkhart

Rosa Getzi lives a life of intrigue at Poiana Brasov with Clement, a werewolf, and Cassandra, the witch. Her past doesn't matter to her – until she discovers what it holds.

Prince Michael Sigmaringen joins his sister-in-law, Caroline, and the vampire prince, Darius, in a daring rescue, igniting Rosa's desire to find her family. However, all is not as it appears. Rickard, Rosa's friend, escapes with her. Clement will go to any lengths to get Rosa and Rickard back.

At Darius' fortress, Michael soon discovers Rickard is a new breed of werewolf – one who can control the change, and Clement hopes to exploit Rickard's abilities.

Michael's courage, strengths, and convictions will be tested like never before. Can Michael and Rosa find true happiness and the rid the lupine haunting of the Sigmaringens once and for all?

Rosa bolted upright. "No!"

Michael's eyes snapped open and he raced to her side. "What's wrong?"

"It was just a dream." Her voice faded away. Sweat beaded on her brow and her body trembled. It must have been a disturbing dream if it affected her like this. The need to comfort her outweighed his common sense to put distance between them and he placed a hand on her shoulder.

"What was it about?" he asked.

She turned to face him, confusion splaying across her lovely features.

"I was in my room sketching and Rickard came in--"

Michael scowled and removed his hand. "Did he hurt you?"

"No. He was talking about Cassandra."

Michael drew in a breath to calm his displeasure. He hated to hear Rickard's name on her
lips. Every time she mentioned him, that arrow in his heart twisted deeper. "What did he say?"

"Cassandra asked him questions about the wolf who made him, but Rickard couldn't answer them all. His memory had holes -- pieces of time he couldn't remember."

"I'm not surprised."

She wrapped her arms around herself. "He was given anise, wasn't he?"

Michael nodded.

She exhaled, striking a vulnerable pose. Her usually focused eyes stared at the wall. Michael grabbed a fresh log and threw it onto the fire. He poked at the burning wood  with a stick.

"What did you do at the fortress?"

"I had lessons with Cassandra in the morning. In the afternoon, Lucien or one of the
guards would escort me into Brasov proper--"

"I'm surprised Clement allowed you to leave."

"I never felt like I was a hostage."

Michael raised an eyebrow. Was she a prisoner or not? "What did you do when you went to the city?"

"I usually visited the St. Nickolas Church. They have an extensive library with a comprehensive section on witchcraft and werewolf legends. I spent an hour or two studying certain books, reading newspapers, and taking notes."

"You were a researcher?"

"I guess you could say that. I also went shopping for personal items."

Michael reached over, removed another apple from his food satchel, and offered it to her,
recalling she hadn't finished the previous one.

Rosa slid her fingers next to his and a familiar pulse traveled up his arm. She affected
him even now. He jerked his hand away, but the pleasure from her touch lingered. A quiet moment passed between them. Finally, he reached over and placed his thumb on her chin. Some instinctual force inside him told him she needed this. Their eyes found each other. A spark passed over her expression. Did she recall something?

"Rosa, I--"

I was given a copy of this book by Goddess Fish in return for an honest review

This is the third book in the Moldavian Moon series, but is meant to be treated as a 'stand alone'. I have to say I wanted to read the first two books after reading this one, partly because I found the lead characters interesting and easy to relate to, and partly, I have to admit, because although the story itself was easy to follow and when necessary the 'back story' was given fluidly and without the feeling of an 'info drop', there are so many characters I did lose track sometimes and had to check back to find out who was who and what their relationship was. That was probably more my fault than that of the writer's though.

The story has some interesting twists and turns and it was fascinating to find some of the characters turn out to be not quite as black as they appeared to be at first. I thought the theory of how werewolves and vampires evolved, particularly interesting and original  The settings are beautifully painted and I felt I was right there.

I loved the 'historical' feel to the book. It is full of action and adventure and by the end I felt I knew the characters and really didn't want the book to end!

Witch of Death by Chrys Fey

I am pleased to welcome fellow Wild Rose Press author Chrys Fey to the Flight Deck today. Below are details of her new release:

Title: Witch of Death
Author: Chrys Fey
Genre: Supernatural/Suspense
Format: eBook Only
Page Count: 45 (short story)
Release Date: May 20th, 2015
Publisher: The Wild Rose Press
Blurb:

Detective Reid Sanders doesn’t believe in the supernatural, but when he’s faced with a crime scene that defies the laws of nature, he has no other choice but to start believing. And solving a magical murder involves working with a witch.
Liberty Sawyer embodies the look of your classic evil witch, so, it’s no surprise when she uncovers the murderer is a witch that she becomes Reid’s number one suspect. If she can’t convince him otherwise, more people could lose their lives to dark magic, including her.

Excerpt:
Liberty Sawyer glided swiftly through the horde of police officers, reporters, and on- lookers. Black hair fell from a rigid part in the middle of her scalp to her hips. Her eyes were a soul-stabbing blue and her lips were blood-red. She towered over the other officers on the scene, and wore all black, which set off the pallor of her skin.

Showing her badge to the officer, she slipped under the crime scene tape. A few paces away, she spotted Detective Corbin talking to his new partner, a man she knew by name but hadn’t had the privilege of meeting yet.

“I cannot believe you called her,” the new man was saying when she came up behind them. “We don’t need a damn psychic!”

“Actually, I’m a witch.” She smiled when Reid jolted and turned to face her. “I’m
Detective Liberty Sawyer.” She stuck out her hand.

“Detective Reid Sanders,” he grunted back and took her hand.

The feel of his palm against hers sent tingles of lust from the tips of her fingers to her shoulder blade, and she knew he felt it too by the way he jerked his hand back. She winked at him playfully, hoping it would unnerve him even more.

Muddling through their honeymoon with a string of thin excuses for their predicament, the lovers defer finding a solution (and panicking) until the return to their home in London. After all, they married for life and to make rock music, not for the love of sex. Right?

But when they resume life as normal in London, all hell breaks loose. Increasingly frantic in their quest for release, the unhappy newlyweds embark on a string of hilarious and occasionally harmful antics that drives them, their band, and an assortment of random strangers to the brink of despair. Aegis Incursion - by S S Seegran - Spotlight and Giveaway

Great as a Standalone or as an Explosive Sequel to #1 Amazon Kindle Bestseller, AEGIS RISING.

On a bright July morning in 1948, a B-29 Superfortress flying a top-secret research mission over Nevada crashes into the calm waters of Lake Mead and sinks, remaining lost for half a century.

It has been nearly a year since five friends - Jag, Kody, Mariah, Tegan and Aari - mysteriously reappeared in a small town in Yukon several weeks after their small plane went down in Northern Canada. All were found in good health but with no recollection of what happened to them after the crash.

A baffling contagion is spreading across the bread-basket of North America destroying vital crops. As this dark shadow marches across the globe, widespread famine and riots bring desperate nations to the brink of war.

These seemingly unrelated events set the stage for a battle between the forces of darkness and those destined to become the 'bearers of light'. From ravaged fields in the Great Plains to clandestine installations around the world, the Aegis League must race against time to save humanity.

…A sound in the distance snapped him out of his daydream. It was a low rumbling, like thunder, but that was impossible—the sky was still bright and cloudless. As the sound gradually became louder, Elwood was able to pinpoint the location and slowly looked toward the east. He squinted against the sun, then gasped when he saw a shimmering silhouette emerge from the glare…

…The aircraft thundered right over Elwood’s head, so near that the vortex of air created by the plane’s passing churned the water violently, capsizing the canoe and pitching him into the lake. He struggled and attempted to cry out, only to choke on water. He floundered back up to the surface and sputtered and spat as he tried to regain his bearings.

Catching sight of the plane as it boomed overhead, he watched, agape, as the aircraft hit the surface of the lake on its belly. The massive propellers struck the water, violently tearing three of the four engines away from the wings…

“Unique and compelling! With non-stop action, adventure and intrigue, Aegis Incursion will appeal to fans of Maze Runner, Percy Jackson and Hunger Games.” ~Michael Beas - Bestselling Author of 'Strump: A World of Shadows' ~

“S.S.Segran brings us a worthy sequel to her best-selling debut novel, Aegis Rising. Relentless action and gravity defying twists and turns hold the reader in a tight grip till the last page.” ~ Honore Gbedze - The SAGE Foundation ~

"RECOMMENDED! A good sequel stands alone as a strong work without the accomplishments of its predecessors, but a great sequel inspires readers to go back and relive a book they've already read, and that is precisely what this book accomplishes." ~ The US Review of Books ~

"FIVE STARS! A great book to dive into and a fantastic follow up to the first... One of the best things author S.S. Segran has done here is that the book can be read as a stand-alone. Highly recommended!" ~ Readers' Favorite Reviews ~

Bio and Links:

S.S.Segran spent a good chunk of her childhood exploring the enchanted forest of a million tales in the mystical land of books. In her early teens, she began crafting intriguing new worlds and conjuring up characters who came alive with the flick of her wand... err... pen. With the publication of her first novel in the Aegis League Series during her senior year of high school, she was surprised by the abundance of time that magically appeared right after graduation. She plans to use this newfound
resource to expand the arc of the series. Her future plans include studying Cognitive Science at university and helping youths in developing countries realize their potential through her non-profit organization, Aegis League (www.aegisleague.org)

When not devouring a book or writing one, S.S.Segran can be found standing behind the cauldron of life, stirring a potion made up of chores, parkour, gaming, drawing, horseback riding and—having recently jumped off a perfectly fine airplane at fifteen thousand feet – perhaps skydiving.
