A Magic Redemption by Tena Stetler - A Character Interview

I'm thrilled to have fellow Wild Rose Press author, Tena Stetler here today - and she's brought along  Gavin Shaughnessy - we couldn't resist the chance for an interview!

Character Interview:  Gavin Shaughnessy – Hero in A Magic Redemption

Where are you from?
Ireland

Did you have a happy childhood?
Aye. Sure did.  ‘Twas three of us kids,
Hannah, Brandy and me. Ma and Da owned and operated Shaughnessy’s Pub in Ballycotton, County of Cork, Ireland.  We helped out in the pub from the time we were teens it provided spending money and looking back now, taught us responsibility.  My two sisters were like oil and water, eventually, Ma and Da built a larger house, so each had their own bedroom on opposite sides of the house.  Now, they are thick as thieves and I own the old family home.

Where do you live now and what do you do for a living
I still live in Ballycotton (Baile Choitin). I purchased my family home from my Da and Ma after they build a new one. I am the publican (manger) at Shaughnessy’s Pub

Is there something you'd rather be doing?
Nope! Love the job, the customers and my family.

What's going on in your life right now?
Ah...well…It’s kind of a mess. I knew Synn was the one for me the minute I laid eyes on her even though we met because her mission was to terminate my sister Brandy and her boyfriend.  The mission failed, Synn was severely punished. She escaped (She’d been kidnapped as a child for her magic abilities and her family slaughtered. Her captors forced her to become a warrior assassin. They controlled her every movement and thought.)  Then she sought refuge from Bruce the Demon Overlord of the Western Hemisphere in return for valuable information she had. He provided protection and gave her freedom in exchange.

With her new found freedom, she has to discover who she is, make a life for herself before she can re-commit to a relationship—our relationship. That situation is complicated because she believes that her former captor, Baltizar, is still seeking revenge with the help of his minions in the mortal world.  You see, he was punished for his part in trying to destroy mankind (A Vampire’s Unlikely Alliance) and exiled to the seventh level of Hell, where supposedly he couldn’t escape. But… as it turns out apparently where there is a will there’s a way.

Our family is also helping with my sister, Brandy’s wedding plans. She’s marrying a vampire, you know. Again, the situation with Baltizar is creating havoc. Can’t celebrate a happy occasion like that with the possibility of annihilation hanging over your head.

Is there someone special in your life?
Yes. Synn. She is the love of my life, but extenuating circumstances have caused us to take a break. She needs to find herself, and place in the world after some pretty terrifying events in her life.
How did you meet? At my family’s pub. She was with the Overlord and his wife and a few other magical creatures. My sister Brandy was very displeased.

What's his/her family like?
Her family was murdered when she kidnapped as a child.

What's keeping you two apart?
A number of things. But first and foremost like I told you earlier her fear of retaliation by her former captor.

What one thing could you do that would make you feel like the relationship will work out?
Destroy Baltizar once and for all. He should have been terminated rather than being exiled. Big Mistake. Though you didn’t hear that from me.  Not sure Bruce would appreciate my saying that out loud, though he most likely would agree after the recent events.

Thank you so much Gavin, that was a fascinating insight!

Tena, just a couple questions for you.  Tell us a little about writing this story.  Was it fun or difficult?
Fun!  Synn was much more of a spit-fire than I imagined. Not having given her or Gavin much thought until my editor, Lill, asked me what happened to them at the end of A Vampire’s Unlikely Alliance. It gave me pause, until Synn danced through my mind, tapping her tiny foot and demanding that I write her story. Now! Gavin took flight right behind her in support of her demands. What choice did I have? A Magic Redemption was born. I hope the readers have as much fun reading her story as I did writing it.
Do your characters always act as you expect?
Never.
LOL, mine don't either, but that's what makes writing so much fun, isn't it!
Are you a plotter, or fly (write) by the seat of your pants?
Oh I very much write by the seat of my pants.

As do I, so we have that in common as well, Tena.

Thanks for sharing a bit of yourself with us Tena - now let's find out a bit more about A Magic Redemption.

A little about A Magic Redemption (5th in A Demon’s Witch Series):

Synn, a demon, carries extraordinary magic and power, but there is more within her than she dreams. Kidnapped as a child, her captors murdered her family and forced her into training as a warrior assassin. When an assignment goes horribly wrong, she finds herself at the mercy of the friends and family of her intended target.  Offering valuable information in exchange for protection, she gains her freedom, but it is not without its challenges.

Gavin Shaughnessy is the publican at his family’s Irish pub.  He is certain Synn is meant to be his and isn’t bothered by her past.  He must find a way to convince her, their future together is stronger than the dark memories that haunt her dreams.

When her past comes calling for revenge, will their love survive the raging inferno she brings down upon them? Or will the searing path of destruction destroy all they hold dear?

A sneak peek between the pages of A Magic Redemption.

He showered, pulled on sweats, and stretched out on his empty king-sized bed. After his long flight, a peaceful sleep came quickly until Synn’s nightmare invaded his dream world. Gut wrenching terror tore through him until he was able to disengage himself from the nightmare. There’d be no phone call this time. For a moment he considered shifting, but he might need a vehicle after arriving at her home. He yanked off his sweats and pulled on jeans, a sweater, donned a coat, and grabbed his keys.

He found her sitting cross-legged on the bedroom floor. Storm curled in her lap. The usually active pup was lying still just peering up at her. When Gavin approached, Storm moved one ear forward and turned her head to look at him.

“It’ll be okay, girl.” He knelt in front of Synn, brushed the hair away from her face. A vacant stare met his gaze into her eyes like she was in a trance. This couldn’t be good.

He’d seen her nightmare. Something was trying to control her. He wouldn’t let it happen. Releasing a breath, he took hold of her shoulders. She’d been like this once before. When she came out of it anyone within arm’s reach could be in danger. Though her magic was tempered these days, it wouldn’t be for long… Changing strategy, he repositioned himself behind her, caught her up in a bear hug, and pushed the pup out of her lap. Storm yelped and went grudgingly but refused to leave her side.

“Synn, it’s me Gavin; you’re safe.” He gave her a little shake. Arms and legs began flailing. She let out a blood curdling scream and kept screaming until he thought the neighbors a few miles away would hear and call the police. He held her tightly, sat down on the floor, and pulled her into his lap. “Synn. Synn. You’re all right. We’re at the cottage.” The screams turned to sobs. She leaned her head back and blinked.

Panic seized her. “Gavin, you’ve got to get out of here. He’s coming for me and will kill everyone associated with me, including Storm.” She reached for the pup cuddling her close to her chest. “I’m so sorry. I knew this would never work. I don’t deserve a normal life.”

“That’s enough. It was a nightmare. That’s all.”

She turned her large aqua eyes on him and raised an eyebrow. “Really?”

About the Author:
Tena Stetler is a best-selling author of award winning paranormal romance. She has an over-active imagination, which led to writing her first vampire romance as a tween to the chagrin of her mother and delight of her friends. After many years as a paralegal, then an IT Manager, she decided to live out her dream of pursuing a publishing career.
With the Rocky Mountains outside her window, she sits at her computer surrounded by a wide array of witches, shapeshifters, demons, faeries, and gryphons, with a Navy SEAL or two mixed in telling their tales. Her books tell stories of magical kick-ass women and mystical alpha males that dare to love them. Travel, adventure and a bit of mystery flourish in her books along with a few companion animals to round out the tales.
Colorado is home; shared with her husband of many moons, a brilliant Chow Chow, a spoiled parrot and a forty-five-year-old box turtle. When she’s not writing, her time is spent kayaking, camping, hiking, biking  or just relaxing in the great Colorado outdoors. During the winter you can find her curled up in front of a crackling fire with a good book, a mug of hot chocolate and a big bowl of popcorn.

Heart Healer - by Leslie Bowes

Happy Independence Day to all my American friends and followers!

It's always a pleasure to welcome a fellow Wild Rose Press author to my Blog.

Leslie Bowes has recently released her time travel romance 'Heart Healer' and  I asked her what inspired her to write the book, and also to tell us a little bit about herself.:

"Heart Healer started out as a historical romance called Rose Hill but it did not get published. So I stared on a contemporary romance called A Second Change At Love.  When I was in middle of writing, I noticed something was amiss. So, I pulled out Rose Hill again and put parts of Rose Hill and A Second Chance at Love together and it became Heart Healer.

I was born and raised in southern Maryland. When I was thirteen I moved to Summerville, South Caroline where I fell in love with the Low country culture and history. South Caroline was my inspiration for my book Heart Healer. Recently I moved to central Va and now I am enjoying the beauty and history of this area. The rolling hills and pastoral views will surely inspire ideas for future stories."

That's fascinating, Leslie, sounds like we're both country lovers. Now let's find out a little more about 'Heart Healer'.

BLURB:
Catherine Andrews is an English woman living in the 1800's. Her father sells her to Blake Von-Clyer to be his wife to pay off debts owed to Mr. Von-Clyer. Catherine soon finds out Blake is a cruel and horrible man.

On their wedding night, to escape his cruelty, she throws herself into the river. Death is better than marriage to a beast.

Christopher King is living in 2014 doing his best to raise his young son Ryan after his wife left him. One night, Christopher finds a woman in the river unconscious and barely breathing. She is also wearing old fashioned clothes. Christopher does everything in his power to help the young women. When Catherine regains consciousness, she finds herself in a strange and unbelievable situation. Terrified, she does her best to keep her guard up against Christopher. But as she gets to know him, she can't help but fall for the man who saved her life. When Catherine's dangerous past comes back to haunt her, it has Catherine and Christopher fighting for each other and their love.

Excerpt
“That’s true, but I don’t need a servant. I need a wife.”

Catherine dropped the spoon as her whole body shook. What was her father planning to do? Hard work? A wife? What was going on? She was not her father’s slave to trade as he wished. She was his daughter. Too nervous to turn around, Catherine prayed that she heard wrong.

“What did you say?” her father asked, shocked.

“You heard me.” Mr. Von-Clyer laughed. “You had no problem selling her to me as a servant Mr. Andrews, but now that I want her for my wife your conscience haunts you. What’s the difference? Either way your debt to me is paid.”

“Catherine, get over here now!” her father yelled drunkenly. The longer she stared at the vein in her father’s neck; she realized that she was making him angrier than Catherine had ever seen before.

She slowly walked over to the table and stood in front of her father. Her heart was pounding in her chest as she watched him drink his last bit of wine.

“You will be Mr. Von-Clyer’s wife to pay off my debt.”

“What debt?” Catherine asked angrily.

“Catherine, do not speak unless you are spoken to,” her father snarled.

“What debt?” Catherine yelled.

Her father jumped up from his chair with an angry shout, bumping the table, but James jumped in front of him.

“You cannot treat Catherine like that, Father. She is your daughter and my sister, not your slave!” James yelled.
Catherine’s father was having none of that. He lunged for James, but Catherine got in between them before her father could do anything. She knelt in front of James and wiped his tears. All the while she prayed for strength.

“Thank you, James, but I need you to go to your room.”

“But, Catherine—”

“No buts. Go to your room and stay there until I come for you.”

As soon as James was in his room, Catherine’s father grabbed her arms and shook her hard.

“Don’t you ever speak to me like that again, Catherine! Do you understand me?”

“Yes, sir,” Catherine whispered, scared for her life.

“Good. Now go with Mr. Von-Clyer and pay off your debt.”

“Father, I beg of you. Tell me what my debt is?”

Release day for Somewhere My Lady by Beth Trisel

It's a pleasure to welcome fellow Wild Rose Press author Beth Trisel to then Flight Deck, today, Good morning, Beth and congratulations on your latest release.

Thanks for having me on your blog, Hywela, to share my new release, Somewhere My Lady (Book 1, Ladies in Time). I’m delighted to be writing time travels again. They suit my flighty attention span. History fascinates me, and I enjoy researching different eras, but I also love mixing in fantasy and the paranormal. Somewhere My Lady is an unusual time travel.
I’m drawn to old homes and have lived in them most of my life, also visited many. Old homes exude an indefinable sense of place, and are never really empty. Perhaps the spirits of those who once dwelt there come back and visit, or leave a part of themselves behind. I don't know, but I like a good ghost story. An avid gardener, I have sprawling beds filled with heirloom flowers and herbs. Some plants have been here for ages and our farm-house was built in the 1870's. Lovely gardens and herbs feature in the story so inhale deeply as you read.
Harrison Hall, the colonial era home in Somewhere My Lady, is loosely based on Shirley Plantation, a magnificent 18th century home, built along the James River in Virginia. In the story, this wonderful manor sized house is a paranormal hot spot, concealing a deadly mystery Hart and Lorna must solve.

‘Somewhere My Lady is a fun supernatural romance that will have you slipping in and out of the past and future as if you were a spirit yourself.’’ ~Colleen’s Book Reviews

Story Blurb:
Lorna Randolph is hired for the summer at Harrison Hall in Virginia, where Revolutionary-War re-enactors provide guided tours of the elegant old home. She doesn't expect to receive a note and a kiss from the handsome young man who then vanishes into mist.

Harrison Hall itself has plans for Lorna – and for Hart Harrison, her momentary suitor and its 18th century heir. Past and present are bound by pledges of love, and modern science melds with old skills and history as Harrison Hall takes Lorna and Hart through time in a race to solve a mystery and save Hart's life before the Midsummer Ball.~

Excerpt:

Something about him held her spellbound…the tilt of his head, arch of his brow, glimpse of his profile… She followed his every move with the fixity of an owl.

He turned blue-gray eyes toward her and sensuous lips curved into a smile on his handsome face. Hands down. No contest. He was the hottest guy ever. Her heart beat a thrilling new rhythm.

He circled closer to where she stood rooted in the foyer, not moving a toe, scarcely drawing breath. Did he truly see her backed tremulously against the wall, or did it only feel that way?

Unlike the others in the ghostly assembly, his eyes didn’t skirt past her. He paused in the dance. Bending at the shoulders, he tipped his hand to her in a genteel flourish.

He’d freakin’ bowed. Her jaw dropped. He most definitely saw her. And she sure as heck saw him.

A sparking sizzle jumped between them, awakening her as she’d never been roused before. Even more than when the house charged through her at her arrival. It was as if she were plugged in—to him.

How that could be, she had no idea, but when he gazed into her eyes, time seemed to stop. She spiraled into moonless stars, and back again to this dizzying realm. To him. Even if she were dreaming, she’d never forget this moment.~

Somewhere My Lady is available from all major online booksellers. In Kindle at: https://www.amazon.com/Somewhere-Lady-Ladies-Time-Book-ebook/dp/B071VTNC7V

Author Bio: Married to my high school sweetheart, I live on a farm in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia surrounded by my human family and furbabies. An avid gardener, my love of herbs and heirloom plants figures into my work. The rich history of Virginia, the Native

Americans, and the people who journeyed here from far beyond her borders are at the heart of my inspiration. I’m especially drawn to colonial America and the drama of the American Revolution. And I love a good ghost story. In addition to Young Adult and New Adult fantasy romance, I also write historical, time travel, and paranormal romance, plus nonfiction.

Once again, congratulations, Beth, it's been fascinating hearing about 'Somewhere my Lady' and I have to agree - I always feel old buildings somehow absorb the essence of people who've lived in them!  (Beautiful cover, by the way!)

Excerpt
She sensed no colors in the murky, lifeless water, and it was freeing. All breath escaped her. Muted visions passed before her eyes—her mother, her father, Gordon, and Cortland. Just a moment longer, she thought…
Suddenly, a burst of warm light invaded her thoughts as air filled her lungs. Red-hot hands burned her shoulders and ripped her from her icy grave. She breathed life into her body. She coughed, gagging on the change.
Muffled words yelled at her.

Oh, God, so hot. His fingers were like hot pokers. Her head pounded as she slowly returned to the present. Heat radiated from her rescuer. Somebody had pulled her from the water.

“Wh—?”

“Hush, lass. You nearly drowned.”

His voice was as soothing as a warm cup of goat’s milk on a winter’s day. A red-hot glow emanated from his body. Never before had she felt such a strong lifeblood, and it nearly burned her. She struggled in his arms to get free. She blinked, only seeing a blurry form before her. “Release me!”

She splashed and wriggled, and he did as told. She clambered to the shoreline. Numb and shaken, she began to dress. It wasn’t easy as she fumbled with slick fingers to put dry clothes over wet skin. She instantly regretted her naked swim. She pulled on her long-sleeved white chemise first.

She faced the forest, away from her rescuer. He quietly splashed to shore. His lifeblood burned into her back. He wasn’t far behind, but he stopped. She refused to look at him until she was fully clothed, not out of embarrassment of her nudity, but for what had just happened. He released a groan and mumbled under his breath about wet boots. His voice was not one of her father’s soldiers.
When she put the last garment on, her brown wool work kirtle, she squeezed out her sopping hair and swept her hands through the knotty mess. She fastened her belt and tied the lacings up the front of the kirtle. Blood returned to her fingertips, and she regained her composure. Belated awareness struck her, and she leaned down and searched through her bag for her dagger.

She spun around. She gasped as she saw the man sitting on the stone-covered shoreline, his wet boots off. Confusion and the hint of a scowl filled his strong-featured face. She staggered back, caught her heel on a stone, and fell, dropping the dagger. Dirt and pebbles stuck to her wet hands and feet, and she instinctively scrambled away from him.

His glower, iridescent dark blue eyes, and disheveled black hair were not unfamiliar. Staring at her was the man she had seen in her dream—it was the man from the wood.

GUEST POST
When not writing, I am reading…

I’ve rediscovered the joy of reading books over the past few years. That sounds odd coming from a writer, but life got “lifey” during my children’s toddling years and when I did have free time, I had found myself writing (or sleeping!), and not picking up a book after a long day of crushed cheerios, meltdowns, or toys caught in the garbage disposal. However, the old adage goes (and most authors recommend), “read as much as you write.” With a cramped family and work schedule, I found this task daunting and reading became another “to-do” instead of a pleasure. A few years ago, when I was hopelessly taking forever to read The Fiery Cross (5th book in the Outlander series), a good friend shared with me a little secret: audiobooks. What the what? No, these are not movies nor do they cheapen the story. They are real books read to you by professional actors. And they are a diamond in the rough for those with busy schedules.

Picking up a book for me at the library or bookstore, in addition to the Elephant and Piggy or Dr. Seuss books for my children, seemed a foreign concept. So I took the plunge. Libraries are free and most have inter-library-loan programs available. This means you can get virtually any book you want, in any format! They are a treasure trove for book lovers! For those car rides to work, audiobooks have become my BFF. Long road trips? You betcha. I even grabbed the second Harry Potter book for a 9-hour road trip with my children. Score!

Exercising? These days I listen to writing podcasts, but in the past, you guessed it, audiobooks kept me on the treadmill. Admittedly, I was skeptical about audiobooks. I love to feel a book in my hand and enter the characters’ worlds on the pages while reclined on my corner chair. But, you know what? With a few exceptions, audiobooks have been amazing!

So what’s on my car passenger seat right now? Ape House (S. Gruen). Some highlights from the past year, courtesy of audiobooks: Leaving Time (J. Picoult), The Light Between Oceans (M.L. Stedman), Big Little Lies and The Husband’s Secret (L. Moriarty), World War Z (M. Brooks), The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest (S. Larrson), At Water’s Edge (Sara Gruen), Wild (C. Strayed), Winter Garden (K. Hannah), and books 5-8 as well as a few novellas in the Outlander Series (D. Gabaldon). I’m an eclectic reader, eager to read books in a range of genres. Haddon’s The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time is on route courtesy of interlibrary loan as I write this.

Of course audiobooks are not the only way to read. I still like a book in my hand. I just read The Shack for a book club, Swing Time is waiting to be opened again, and I recently read Stephen King’s 11.22.63. No matter how we read, a book is a great experience, and for authors, it improves our craft as we lose ourselves in the protagonist’s journey…even if it just happens to be a lyrical Scottish narrator who pervades our mind with sweet nothings on our drive to work.

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts with us, Jean,  I'm sure a lot of readers can relate to what you say, especially about reading a book being such a great experience. I too am a Stephen King fan - and I found The Shack a very moving story. Congratulations again on your Release Day, wishing you many sales and much success in the future, can't wait to read 'A Hundred Kisses'!

The completion of her mission has consequences that neither of them could have foreseen.

Enter Dahll Tarron, who becomes involved in a long and dangerous quest to find the Destiny. Fates become intertwined, perils shared, culminating in the realization that sometimes love may be so close that there is a danger it will not be recognized until it is too late…

(292 pages) Sensual

EXCERPT
Kerry knelt beside Jess and groaned in anguish. There was nothing he could do to save her. His eyes misted as he lifted her into his arms. "It should have been me. That laser was meant for me--"

His voice faltered, and he shook his head to clear his vision. A smear of blood glistened on her lips ... a stain on perfection and evidence of his own negligence.

"Please..."

He should have prevented this. Somehow, he should have prevented it! He ran his fingers through the mass of flame-colored hair, golden highlights gleaming in the Phidian sunshine. He buried his face in its softness and held her close to his heart...

Book Blurb:

Chicago, Fall 1964

Allison Stiles is the epitome of responsibility. Guardian to her two rambunctious younger brothers, she also runs a home daycare. While she doesn't have time for a vacation, she really needs a diversion.   Enter Eric Thomas, her new neighbor. Tall, dark and handsome and just what she needs to get her mind off her responsibilities, even if only for a short time.

Moving into the house he inherited from his uncle was not part of Eric Thomas' plan. Yet, starting a new business ties up a good portion of his capital, so he forgoes the fancy downtown apartment for the quaint Rogers Park neighborhood.

Now if he could just get his mind off his sexy neighbor and back on the business at hand.

Excerpt
Eric shifted from one foot to the other, balancing the box of office supplies he’d purchased on his hip while lifting the grocery bag from the trunk with his opposite hand.

He’d spent the morning touring office space in midtown Chicago and still not found anything within their price range. It looked as if the Thomas-Watson Agency would have to flourish a bit longer in its makeshift digs.

Thank heaven courting clients could be done in a restaurant, or the client’s office, rather than in the cramped confines of his back room.

A noise drew his attention from his office-hunting dilemma and toward the daycare across the street. The petite blonde was leading a line of small children through a maze of toys.

Her long hair blew across her cheeks with each gust of wind, and she reached up to brush the errant strands off her face. His body tightened when he imagined her fingertips stroking his cheek in the same way.

He shook his head, dislodging the thought. The last thing he needed was the complication of a woman. Especially one who came saddled with a bunch of noisy kids.

Yeah, but they do eventually go home, you know.

Rather than acknowledge his inner voice of reason, he shifted his gaze and scanned the rest of the daycare’s large yard. Another woman, taller, thinner, with jet black hair was organizing a game of tag among a few of the older children.

And despite the noisy diversion of their laughter, his attention was drawn back to the blonde. All around her, activity had stopped. Three little girls sat in silence at her feet.

She’d taken a seat on the front steps and lifted one of the smallest of the bunch onto her lap. Even surrounded by a handful of children, her tapered slacks and t-shirt covered in bright splashes of primary colors, she exuded an allure that set his nerves on edge.

She bent to listen to something the child was saying, and he found himself straining to hear as well. The faint sound of the child’s cries drew her obvious compassion, and she gathered the little boy to her chest.

Lucky kid.

He stomped up the porch stairs, cursing the fact he could be so easily distracted. Mental note number three: stop ogling your sexy neighbor.

Fun Fact:

The friendly neighborhood traditions of Halloween were gleaned from my own childhood when it wasn’t unusual to trek for miles for pillowcases full of candy. Nobody worried about tainted treats. We trick or treated in stores, restaurants, and even in bars. We ran gleefully through the streets from the first streetlight until we could barely see our hands in front of our faces. It was the one time our parents looked the other way about curfew and more than one classmate missed school the next day due to a tummy ache.

Author Bio:
Like most authors, Nancy Fraser began writing at an early age, usually on the walls and with crayons or, heaven forbid, permanent markers. Her love of writing often made her the English teacher’s pet, which, of course, resulted in a whole lot of teasing. Still, it was worth it.

Published in multiple genres, Nancy currently writes for four publishers. She has published twenty-two books in both full-length and novella format. Nancy will release her 25th book in early 2017. She is currently working on her next Rock and Roll novella and two other equally exciting projects.

When not writing (which is almost never), Nancy dotes on her five wonderful grandchildren and looks forward to traveling and reading when time permits. Nancy lives in Atlantic Canada where she enjoys the relaxed pace and colorful people.
