Jess has been rescued from her crippled ship by the crew of the Destiny. After a great deal of hesitation she tells the Jon, the ship's commander, and Kerry Marchant, the ship's second in command, that she is on a mission to save the people of a distant planet from slavery and the exploitation of their people's medical advances and the planet's mineral wealth.
You can read last week's snippet HERE
After Jess has explained that she is on a mission to bring assistance to the beleaguered planet, Phidia, Jon, the Destiny's commander calls a meeting of the crew to discuss whether they should help her or not.
“What do you think, Ragin...Delian?”
“As far as we are able to tell without entering her mind, she seems completely trustworthy,” the telepath said. “Her aura shows no indication of deceit or trickery.”
“We believe we should help her,” Delian added.
“Laitha...Kerry?” Jon queried.
Laitha tossed her head, grinning, “Oh, let’s do it. I was getting bored anyway, I could do with a good fight.”
“And I don’t like the idea of a defenceless planet being taken over by invaders and subjected to the sort of oppression we left back on Earth,” Jon said.
He looked questioningly at Kerry. The Destiny’s second-in-command gave one of his uncharacteristic smiles as if there had never been any doubt about his answer. “Why not? Everyone else seems to be in favour, and I tend to agree with Laitha, I too could use a little excitement.”

I agree - we need excitement in our lives.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely, Aurora, everyone needs a little excitement - let's hope it's not more than they actually bargained for!
DeleteWhat a way to break the boredom . . . rescue a planet. Why not?
ReplyDeleteWhy not indeed? Thanks so much for stopping by and commenting Diane.

ReplyDeleteLOL Jacob, I think you have a point there! :)

ReplyDeleteI agree with Jessica. Here comes relief to Jess.
ReplyDeleteWell that was easy but I suspect the actual accomplishment of the plan will be full of challenges! Interesting excerpt. I liked that they all got a vote.
ReplyDeleteYou're right Veronica, it's not going to be an easy task. (Yes, the Destiny is a very democratically run ship! :) )
DeleteThey're going to try to do the right thing. Good for them.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by, Ed - yes, they want to help now they know Jess's story.

DeleteThank goodness they're a little bored and will go to her aid. lol Enjoyed the banter.
ReplyDeleteThanks Karen - glad you enjoyed it. I think they'd probably have gone to her aid anyway, but boredom is a good excuse! :)
DeleteI like it! It is giving off serious Firefly vibes. :-)
ReplyDeleteThanks Teresa - the trilogy has actually been compared to Firefly, Startrek and a few others - but I wasn't consciously thinking of them when I wrote the story, but I certainly take it as a compliment! :)
