This is the last excerpt I'm posting for a while. I need to concentrate on my current W.I.P. but I'll still keep in touch with my Sunday Snippets friends.

BACKGROUND:
Having fulfilled the mission set by Apollo, Terpsichore the muse of dance  is about to return to Olympus when she meets the mysterious Myrddin.  She is lured into a bog by the evil Ellilldan, the fire demons.Myrddin rescues her. Although there is a mutual attraction between them, Myrddin is betrothed to another and is on his way to rescue her from her kidnapper. Apollo has sent Terpsichore a message that Myrddin is in danger. In this excerpt, Myrddin at last reveals his relationship to his betrothed.

SNIPPET

You're telling me you were willing to marry a woman who meant nothing to you?"

Myrddin sighed. "Not exactly, it was a marriage arranged by our fathers when we were still children. We only met a few times; we didn't really know each other. Gwendolyn was right about that. But...she is very beautiful and I  thought I loved her. I really did."

Terpsichore wished more than ever she still had the power to read thoughts. The possibility he might no longer care for Gwendolyn, and be free to love her, was torture. Yet, did she really want to love a man who fell out of love so easily?

"I'm trying to understand, are you saying you no longer love her, even though you came all this way at risk of your life, to rescue her."

"It was my duty. "

  1. At what point do love and duty coincide? And which of the two is a stronger motivator for him?

    1. Good questions, Ed, and not easy for him to prioritise the one over the other. Fortunately, the matter will be resolved!

  4. So many conflicting thoughts. Duty is one thing, but love is something else completely. When they collide, it can be wonderful or very bad. I hope he figures everything out.

  5. He's correct. Duty comes first, until... love beckons?

  6. I appreciate her concern over how fast he seems to fall out of love...although his devotion to duty is a pretty good sign...excellent excerpt.

    1. Thanks Veronica. There's actually a lot more to Myrddin than has been revealed so far. I wonder if anyone here can guess who he really is? (The clue's in the name - pronounced Mur-thin)

  9. He said he "thought" he loved her, so it might not be fair to paint him as someone who falls out of love quickly. I bet she's too anxious to think of that!

    1. You got it, Caitlin! He's not had anything other than a few meetings with his intended to guage love by - until he met Cora. She'll realise that when she's had time to think about it.

  10. Love and duty aren't the same thing but both are indicative of a good, solid man. I hope she realizes that. We'll miss you, Lyn.

  11. Intriguing snippet. Duty and Love- I'm thinking he may in his own way love Gwendolyn but he's not 'in love' with her. :)

  12. You've hit the nail right on the head there, Karen

  13. What a tough spot to be in, especially when he definitely won't give up on the rescue. And what will happen when he DOES rescue Gwendolyn? How will she feel about it? Great snippet, Hywela.

    1. Thanks Siobhan - I don't want to give too much away, but Gwendolyn's situation may not be as simple as it seems.
