By Jessica Redmerski

Genre: Dystopian/ Post apocalyptic

Age category: Young Adult/ New Adult/ Adult

Pages: 683 pages

Release Date: 28 August 2017

Blurb:

Thais Fenwick was eleven-years-old when civilization fell, devastated by a virus that killed off the majority of the world’s population. For seven years, Thais and her family lived in a community of survivors deep in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains. But when her town is attacked by raiders, she and her blind sister are taken away to the East-Central Territory where she is destined to live the cruel and unjust kind of life her late mother warned her about.

Atticus Hunt is a troubled soldier in Lexington City who has spent the past seven years trying to conform to the vicious nature of men in a post-apocalyptic society. He knows that in order to survive, he must abandon his morals and his conscience and become like those he is surrounded by. But when he meets Thais, morals and conscience win out over conformity, and he risks his rank and his life to help her. They escape the city and set out together on a long and perilous journey to
find safety in Shreveport, Louisiana.

Struggling to survive in a world without electricity, food, shelter, and clean water, Atticus and Thais shed their fear of growing too close, and they fall hopelessly in love. But can love survive in such dark times, or is it fated to die with them?

I absolutely loved this book.  I really enjoyed the 'True Calling' Series but if anything, I enjoyed Saven: Deception even more. I found Sadie an easy character to identify with and relate to, and Logan Chandler is the kind of dark, hunky hero every girl dreams of.  Each of the characters is very skilfully drawn and as usual with Siobhan Davis's books, there are a lot of twists and turns to the plot,  twists that cause the reader to wonder exactly who can really be trusted, and whether Sadie has jumped out of the proverbial frying pan into a fire of deception and intrigue. This makes for a real page turner and I found it very hard to put the book down. The supporting characters are all very different and each individual is as real and credible as Sadie and Logan. The world building, as with 'True Calling' is well executed and believable, and the detail and description makes it easy to visualize Thalassic City, the 'city under the sea'.

I can thoroughly recommend this book, as one which many adults will enjoy as much as the age range for which it is primarily written.  My only criticism is that it ended in a way that made me long for the next 'episode'.  I can't wait for the next book in this series!

The above review is my own, personal opinion. A free book was provided and accepted for an honest and impartial review, but not in an effort to control the outcome of the review. No compensation has been paid or accepted for any reviews on this site, favorable or otherwise.

Excerpt:
Please note that this book is currently undergoing professional editing so this is an unedited sample. The final published version will be slightly different.

The stench of stale sweat, unwashed skin, and rancid body odor assaults my nostrils and I gag. The temp in the carriage must be pushing ninety degrees and a steady line of sweat coasts down my spine, gluing my shirt to my back. A craving to crawl out of my skin hits me like a bullet to the chest.
It’s not a new sentiment. It’s an urge I feel at least once every hour.
A potent desire to be anyone but myself.
To live any life but this one.
Heat rolls off the large body pressed into me from behind and the man grunts loudly. The desire to shed my skin accelerates and I shudder uncontrollably. Everywhere I look I’m confronted by a sea of grimy, male chests in dirty, sweat encrusted work wear. Being short sucks almost all of the time, but being stuck in the middle of an overcrowded, bursting-at-the-seams subway carriage, during one of the hottest heatwaves New York has ever known, sucks butt on a stratospheric level, and has me cursing the genes that stalled my growth at five feet one.
Claustrophobia swoops in, surrounding me in an anxiety-laced cloud, and I know I’ve reaching my tipping point.
I can’t bear this a second longer.
With my lungs screaming for air, I push my way forward, shuddering as I squeeze past more disgusting, heaving forms. I fling myself out onto the platform in the nick of time. The train eases out of the station as my legs make a break for freedom. Bounding up the stairs two at a time, I thrust my tiny frame forward, propelling my legs as fast as they can go. My entire being strains for release.

MY REVIEW

Another amazing Roller coaster read from Siobahn Davis. I have to admit the main question on my mind all the way through  the series has been - Cal or Zane?  One moment I would be convinced that Zane and Ari are meant for each other, the next I would be feeling the same way about Cal. I love the way Siobahn gets under the skin of her characters.  They are all very different, and this adds to the enjoyment of the books, making  them seem very plausible and easy to relate to.  Some characters who seem pretty unpleasant to start with, turn out to be very different when the reason for their actions becomes clear, and again there are several surprising twists to the story which keep the reader guessing, and some interesting revelations about the relationships between some of the characters. All three main characters have grown and developed with each successive book. Ari especially has changed and matured, and is now starting to realise that there she has powers beyond the telepathic connection she and Zane share.

The plot is fairly complex, a good Science Fiction background, with much political intrigue, battles, and loads of action and suspense. The reader is carried along with the characters and I could visualize everything as it happened.

As with the first two books, this is a real page turner. The climax is exciting and amazing, and even when the main battle has been won there is more to come and one wonders if there can possibly be a satisfactory conclusion. There is so much packed into this story and so many twists and turns and it would be easy to give some hints, but if you haven't yet read this series I wouldn't want to spoil it for you.  One disclosure toward the end confirmed suspicions I'd had for a while, and a question that hung over the series from the first book was answered. There were also other revelations that I certainly didn't see coming. A great finish to the series, and I love the way the author wrapped everything up at the end, answering all the questions and tying up any lingering loose ends, so the reader is left completely satisfied, a very enjoyable read.

More Praise for Destiny Rising:
“It was beyond brilliant, totally unputdownable, wildly entertaining, edge of the seat action, full of suspense; it totally rocked. Loved the ending, loved the book.” Karla. Goodreads Reviewer.

“This is without a doubt the best book this author has written so far. I loved it from the start until the end. This series shows how a love triangle can be done right. Destiny Rising evoked so many emotions in me … and the ending, wow, so powerful. I highly recommend this series.” Lola’s Reviews.

“I cannot believe all of the whammy that this author packed into her book. It’s insane how quickly she’s put out these three books, and the quality is so incredibly good.” Danielle. Paraeducator and Goodreads Reviewer.

“The events in this book, especially the ones I thought I could handle, left my heart and mind racing. Siobhan Davis is an exceptional writer and she knows how to wrap a reader around her fingers.” Khayzelle. Written Arts Blog.

“Suspense, and the urge to turn the page were almost overwhelming, resulting in quite a few long nights. The story is complex, but solidly built. Good to the last page.” Patricia Hamill. Author Blogger. Puretextuality. @PatriciaHamill2

“I cannot put my love for Siobhan Davis’ True Calling series into words – it’s easily one of my favorite series. Destiny Rising tugs at your heart strings and messes with your feelings, but it is so wonderful. The writing is brilliant and flows wonderfully. Davis’ brings the series to a close with an epilogue that ties everything perfectly together. What a fantastic ride…”
Danielle. RamblingB00ks Blog.

“True Calling was great, and Beyond Reach was awesome, but Destiny Rising took the series to a whole new level. This series deserves to become as well-known as popular series such as The Maze Runner, The Hunger Games, Divergent, etc... It's that good.”
Rose. Paranormal Books Blog.

ELECTED Excerpt

First time the two main characters meet

I fall into a fitful sleep, but when I hear a noise in my room, it jars me awake. The mid-morning sun is high in the sky, which must mean I slept straight through to the next day. I don’t make a movement, trying to assess the sound. It’s footsteps coming from across my bedroom near the window. I expect to see my mother or a maid, but the figure is a man. It’s too slender to be my father and too tall to be Tomlin.

My hand instinctively juts out from under my bed covers and finds the small whittling knife on my nightstand. I use it merely to carve wood, but it’s the closest weapon I have. I close my fist around its small handle, ready to plunge it into my attacker should he step forward. I lie in wait, at the defense. But then I think, if he has a weapon, he could strike me from afar. So, I gently lift the sheets off my body and step out of bed, now on the offensive.

His back is to me, and since my footsteps are light as a feather, he doesn’t turn.

I wonder why the guards at my door didn’t stop him, but I have little time to ponder because I’m now inches from the man’s back. He still doesn’t move. He’s got something in his hands at waist level. It must be an intricate weapon. One he’s getting ready to use.

I lift the knife higher in the air, ready to advance on him, when the thing in the man’s hand lets out a loud “Squawk!”

I falter for a second, the tip of my foot catching against a raised floorboard, and it’s in that brief moment the man hears me and abruptly turns.

“Hey!” he says, stepping backward against my window when he sees me so close.

“Get back!” Still, I don’t hear guards ready to storm in and rescue me. So I stand my ground, knife raised, ready to inflict damage against this man myself if I need to.

I look at him closer. He’s not even a man. He’s my age.

“Watch what you’re doing with that thing!” The boy’s voice sounds familiar, but I can’t think where I’ve heard it before. I concentrate only on keeping my ground. Keeping him in place.
“Don’t move,” I say. “If you do, I’ll advance. And show me your hands!”
“I’m not moving!” He raises both hands in the air, palms open so I can see they’re empty. I want to trust this boy. I don’t want to have to harm him with my knife. But it is
n’t until I see one of my pet parrots fly off the boy’s shoulder and onto mine that I realize I know him.
I’ve never spent more than a second up close to the bird keeper, but over the years I’ve made a personal pastime of watching him from afar. The boy’s name is Griffin. He’s the son of my father’s veterinarian. Griffin is the apprentice, administering to the smaller animals around our house. He’s fixed the wing of my parrot before.
I step back but don’t lower the knife.

“What are you doing in here?” My voice is gruff. I might know this boy, but he could still be here to do harm.

“I didn’t know you were in here. If I’d known, obviously, I wouldn’t have come in to look after your birds.”
The parrot gives another shrill squawk. I study the boy for a moment. Close to me now, for only the second time in my life, I stare at him openly. The dark hair I’ve seen from afar falls forward over his brow but ends in sharp points around the sides of his ears, like he’s cut it himself without a mirror. His eyes are a deep amber too. Like fresh gingerbread cookies straight out of the oven, glowing and bright. He’s lean but relatively tall.

The one thing I know about him for sure is his gait. Since before I can remember, Griffin was the only male my age allowed into our house. He followed his father around, watching him work and then taking over some of the veterinary duties himself. I made an art of subtly watching Griffin to learn how a male my age moved and talked. It was one thing studying the masculine characteristics of my father, but it was altogether another to study someone my own age.

And then there’s the one time I did see Griffin up close, just for a brief second when I was thirteen, but the memory stayed with me for years.

I realize we’re staring each other down.
“Well, are you going to lower the knife, or do I have to knock it from your hand?”

His Hometown Girl - Guest post and Giveaway

His Hometown Girl banner

I'm delighted to have Karen Rock as my special guest  on the Flightdeck today,  with her latest book, the heartwarming 'His Hometown Girl.'  Over to you, Karen:

Today is my stop during the blog tour for His Hometown Girl by Karen Rock. This book blitz is organized by Lola's Blog Tours. The book blitz runs from March 31 till April 13, you can view the whole tour schedule here.

Karen Rock: Caught between a Holstein and a Gander!

Growing up, I looked forward to visiting my grandparents’ Century dairy farm every Sunday. A century farm is a farm that’s been owned, continuously, by the same family for over a hundred years. Mine had raised Holsteins on their land in Malone, New York, for over two hundred plus years. Although Malone is a small, rural town, it’s famous in a way that meant everything to me as a girl. Still does. As a fan of the Little House on the Prairie books, I thrilled at knowing that my family had known the Wilder family and that Almanzo, Laura Ingalls Wilder’s husband, had grown up in this beautiful countryside. It fired up my imagination to read Farmer Boy and see Malone through Manny’s eyes. Although I loved every book in that series, especially These Happy Golden Years, I reread Farmer Boy the most since it was so close to home.

Like Almanzo, I had my own set of adventures on the farm and though some didn’t end well, as the one I’m about to relate, they’ve all stayed with me and inspired me while writing His Hometown Girl. This particular adventure began while I was spending a summer weekend at my grandparents’ farm house. I loved any excuse to stay there since it meant I got to sleep in the guest room which had cream wallpaper with a pink rosebud pattern, slanted ceilings, a four post bed and a cherry vanity. It made me feel like royalty to stay there, especially since my grandmother always fussed over me and made my favorites like chicken and biscuits and shepherd’s pie.

Best of all, I got to spend time around the farm animals. I helped my Uncle Bob in the barn a bit, though I usually got up too late to do much with the morning milking. Nevertheless, I considered myself good at handling cows and their size and strength had never intimidated me, not with those large brown eyes and docile nature. So when my grandmother told me the goslings were learning to swim in the duck pond, I didn’t think twice about jamming my feet into sneakers and heading for that pasture.
It was a bright summer day, the morning air so crisp I could have taken a bite out of it. I raced down the long driveway shadowed by towering sugar maples and ignored my grandmother’s shout to be careful around the cows. She always said that. I did, however, look for a spot to get through the electric fence where there weren’t any around. I didn’t want them thinking I had carrots in my pockets (which I usually did but forgot in my rush). The black and white Holsteins were a bit of a distance off, their heads lowered as they nibbled at the shorn grass.

I ignored the urge that always had me holding on to electric fences to see how long before I let go, and ducked between the top and middle barbed wires. Immediately, a number of the cows’ heads popped up. I was about thirty feet from the fence before I few started trotting my way. Instead of the friendly lowing I heard whenever I entered the barn, I heard their stomping feet and angry breaths. My heart hammered. Where were the gentle creatures that tickled my fingers with their velvety muzzles? Suddenly the sun felt hot on my neck and a trickle of sweat ran down my back. I eyed the fenced in duck pond area then the electric fence along the driveway. Did I need to make a run for it? If so, the driveway was closer. But through the rushes, I glimpsed a pair of tall Canadian geese and their goslings swimming on the pond. I had to get a closer look.

I raced for the pond and the cows charged. I could hardly believe how aggressive they were. They knew me. And I thought only bulls charged… boy was I wrong! These gals were tough… terrifying actually. I barely made it to the duck pond before the cows stopped short and stared me down across the flimsy divide. My breath couldn’t be caught and it left me as I collapsed to the ground. I was glad to have made it, but frightened about getting back. Would the cows forget about me? Let me sneak away in peace after I got my fill of the adorable baby geese? I hoped so.

I crept to the pond’s edge and sighed in delight as I spotted them. They were so tiny as they paddled after their magnificent parents! As their feathers hadn’t come in, they were still covered with a fuzzy- looking beige and tan down. They kept calling to their mother and the din made me forget, for a little while, about the huffing cows that still hadn’t left the pond’s fence. Lost in that moment, I laid on my stomach and watched the water ripple behind the proud family as they circled the pond. I must have closed my eyes because a loud
squawk made them snap back open. The gander had spotted me and he wasn’t happy to have an intruder near his children. I jumped to my feet, remembering times I’d felt the pinch of a beak on my hand when I’d fed overeager birds. Scrambling backwards as the male goose waddled faster than I could have ever imagined, I slipped and fell hard. His nip on my sneaker had me back on my feet and this time, I all out raced to the fence. Only… the cows that had chased me there hadn’t left. I was literally caught between a protective goose and territorial cows. What to do?

Since we didn’t have cell phones back then, and the farm house was too far away to call for help, I raced around the pond, the gander on my heels, honking all the way. I leaped on top of a small house we’d built for them, out of reach of his snapping beak. Hours passed, or at least it felt that way, as I sat on the roof, my knees clutched to my chest. Eventually, the goose returned to his family, but the cows never wandered far, essentially pinning me down.

At last, I saw one of my uncle’s farm hands driving a tractor up the drive and stood up to flag him down. He waved his hands up and down when he entered the pasture, and the cows shied away from him. I was so relieved that I hugged him when we were out of the pasture. Later, at dinner, he stayed to regal everyone with the tale about how I’d been held hostage by a twenty pound goose and a bunch of cows. It was hard not to laugh along with the story, but I never forgot to have a healthy respect for ‘innocent’ farm animals again!

That's a great story Karen. As a country girl myself, I know how  threatening geese and cows can be, although they're usually just curious. Thanks for sharing this with us.  Now to find out more about your book.

His Hometown Girl

Blurb:
He'd always managed to best her…

his hometown girlJodi Chapman will do whatever it takes to get top care for her autistic son. If that means going home and convincing local farmers to sell their land, so be it. Even if her biggest opponent, childhood rival Daniel Gleason, is equally determined to convince farmers to buy into his co-op plan. And he's not playing fair.

Facing off against Daniel is the last thing Jodi wants. The attraction that's always fueled their competitiveness is as strong as ever and just as distracting. But with both their futures on the line, and years of distrust between them, how can they ever be on the same side?

EXCERPT
At last, off they went with a jerk that made her teeth knock together.

Wow. The thrum of the machine beneath her and the sense of control as she steered
filled her with a rush of adrenaline. It’d been such a long time since she’d driven a
tractor, and the thrill of it returned to her. The wind whipped her hair behind her, carrying
away her fear. Tyler’s screeching echoed her own elation and the air she breathed smelled
slightly sweet, like growing things.

When she looked over her shoulder, Sue waved and Daniel jogged beside them. When
they rounded the last barn and headed out into lush, open fields, Tyler squealed and she
wanted to join him. She hadn’t been surrounded by this much unbroken greenery in a
long time. Even when she spoke with farmers, she met them in their homes, not on their
fields. Perhaps she should have followed up on Midland’s purchases and seen the
improvements they’d made as Daniel had suggested. She’d actually missed this. When
she returned to Aunt Grace’s house, she would set up an appointment with a company
farm and bring Daniel as promised.

Daniel disappeared for a moment and she thought they’d left him behind until she felt
the tractor dip in back and his voice whisper in her ear.

“So far so good.”

She shivered in awareness of his proximity as he balanced behind them on the storage
box. His fingers rested on her shoulders as he stood to his full height.
Jodi peeked up at him and took in the handsome picture he made. Beltless, low-slung
jeans rode on his narrow hips and a thin T-shirt stretched across his well-defined chest.
From this angle, his jaw looked more square than ever, his muscular neck rising from
broad shoulders. The bright blue sky behind him contrasted with his dark hair and hazel
eyes.

Another bone-jarring mud hole made Tyler flap his hands and Jodi return her eyes to
the straightaway. And that’s when she saw them…

Strawberries.

The sun-kissed rows of plants stretched to a distant tree line, the berries so blood-ripe,
so rich and lovely, that the invitation to pluck and sink her teeth into them was
irresistible. How long since she’d gathered fruit? Delight filled her.

“The local schools and families have picked most of the fields, but this section is
unharvested,” he hollered over the engine’s roar.

“Okay.” She slowed the machine, feeling shaky but victorious when it rolled to a stop.
Since her father’s accident, she’d avoided machinery like this. Now she’d conquered it,
and a feeling of lightness grew within her.

Daniel jumped off and held out a hand, his eyes dancing. The sun brought out the
lighter brown in his hair and made the yellow flecks in his eyes shine like gold beneath
thick lashes. “Ready?”

More than, she thought, her excitement hard to contain. She wanted to rush through the
rows of plants, trailing her fingers along the crinkly leaves, inhaling the earthy goodness.
Her hands fumbled to take out Tyler’s earplugs before she undid the buckle and handed
him to Daniel. He held the wiggling boy with one hand and extended another to help her
down.

“Thank you. Oh.” An idea pulled her up short when her heels sunk into the ground.
“What will we put the berries in?”
