An exciting weekend!
I had a busy and exciting weekend! First of all I took part in a panel with three other authors at our local literary festival - Beaconlit.
The discussion was entitled ‘What’s in a Genre?’ and was a lively debate about Women's Fiction (i.e. 'Romance') with Jean Fullerton, Christina Jones, with moderator Rowan Coleman leading the discussion and keeping us all in order. It was very well attended and we had some interesting questions from the floor. There were many events going on throughout the day, and it was a great day out for readers and writers alike. I even sold some books!
Then as soon as it was over, my hubby and I were off to an evening party for our next door neighbours wedding. The location was a local farm and we had a fantastic time. It was a beautiful, sunny evening and we all sat outside on bales of straw, munching on the hog roast, pizza, chocolate cake and icecream! There was dancing and music in the barn, which was all decked out in fairy lights
(Sorry the pictures are a bit blurry, not sure why, but all in all it was a great evening!
Next weekend should be exciting too, as I'm off to the Romance Novelists Association Conference in Shropshire. Really looking forward to it!

Writers share an 8 to 10 sentence snippet on Sunday each week. Be sure to visit the other writers - they're listed Below:
If you'd to share your own 8-10 sentence snippet, whether published or not, follow the link and sign up. It's a great community to be a part of!
I'm currently sharing snippets from Starquest, the first book in the SF Romance series, The Destiny Trilogy.
Thanks so much to everyone who commented last week. (I'll be away at the RNA conference next week so will have to miss a week but hope to continue with the penultimate snippet from this book the week after.
Summary of snippets so far:
Having been rescued from her sabotaged starship by the crew of the Destiny, Jess has persuaded them to help her save the inhabitants of the planet Phidia from a cruel invader by the name of Ayandos. Kerry Marchant, the ship's second in command, has had to revise his initial mistrust of her. He is also somewhat stunned on learning that far from being the deceitful character he'd thought her, she is not only on a mission to save a planet, but is in fact an interstellar missionary!

Punctuation slightly Edited from published version to keep within sentence count.
Now that he felt confident she no longer posed a danger to the ship, he admitted to feeling a certain concern for her. She was obviously still anxious about something and he could not surmise what it might be. She was starting to disturb him more than he cared to admit, and it was no longer because he did not trust her. There had been a note of sincerity in her voice when she’d told her story, which was as convincing to him as it obviously was to Jon.
He shrugged, he must have been in space too long. He was growing soft. He had never lost sleep over a woman before and he was not about to do so now. Not even for a beautiful, green-eyed missionary with long, flame-coloured hair. He narrowed his eyes in sudden resolve. No, especially not for a beautiful, green-eyed missionary with long, flame-coloured hair.

Enter Dahll Tarron, who becomes involved in a long and dangerous quest to find the Destiny. Fates become intertwined, perils shared, culminating in the realization that sometimes love may be so close that there is a danger it will not be recognized until it is too late…

WeWriWar - Starquest - The Destiny's crew makes a decision

Jess has been rescued from her crippled ship by the crew of the Destiny. After a great deal of hesitation she tells the Jon, the ship's commander, and Kerry Marchant, the ship's second in command, that she is on a mission to save the people of a distant planet from slavery and the exploitation of their people's medical advances and the planet's mineral wealth.
You can read last week's snippet HERE
After Jess has explained that she is on a mission to bring assistance to the beleaguered planet, Phidia, Jon, the Destiny's commander calls a meeting of the crew to discuss whether they should help her or not.
“What do you think, Ragin...Delian?”
“As far as we are able to tell without entering her mind, she seems completely trustworthy,” the telepath said. “Her aura shows no indication of deceit or trickery.”
“We believe we should help her,” Delian added.
“Laitha...Kerry?” Jon queried.
Laitha tossed her head, grinning, “Oh, let’s do it. I was getting bored anyway, I could do with a good fight.”
“And I don’t like the idea of a defenceless planet being taken over by invaders and subjected to the sort of oppression we left back on Earth,” Jon said.
He looked questioningly at Kerry. The Destiny’s second-in-command gave one of his uncharacteristic smiles as if there had never been any doubt about his answer. “Why not? Everyone else seems to be in favour, and I tend to agree with Laitha, I too could use a little excitement.”

WeWriWa - Jess's confession.

Jess has been rescued from her crippled ship by the crew of the Destiny but Kerry Marchant, the ship's second in command does not trust her and demands to know the truth.
You can read last week's snippet HERE
Her voice took on an edge as she went on. “Their main
settlement, Mirrahn, has been taken over by invaders from the Omega Quadrant,
led by a mutant warlord known as Ayandos. He has tremendous power over his own
people as well as the Phidians, it’s something akin to hypnosis, they seem to
obey him mindlessly. He plans to bring in more ships and take over the planet.”
She clenched her fists until her knuckles whitened. “He’s
ripping up the land to get at her ores and precious stones and has made slaves
of her inhabitants. Worse than this, though, he intends to make Phidia the
prime medical centre for that part of the galaxy. They’ve made tremendous
advances in cloning, nano and transplant surgery, bio-regeneration and preventive
medicine among other things, he intends to grow rich on their knowledge.”
“Surely,” Jon put in quietly, “it mightn’t be such a bad
thing for the Phidians to share their knowledge with other worlds and
civilisations?”
“They always have, that’s
how Ayandos was able to take control so easily. They have never tried to
prevent anyone from visiting the planet, and their services are available to
anyone who needs them. Now, with Ayandos as dictator, only the wealthiest will
be able to afford treatment.” She pushed back her hair and met his gaze. “I’ve
known these people a long time – I’ve grown to love them and they trust me.
They begged me to fetch help before it’s too late.”

Raine shrugs it off as a

orders her intruder to take a hike. But the handsome figment of her
imagination won’t take no for an answer, and kidnaps her anyway,
launching her into a world of utmost danger—and urgent purpose.

Ruled by unpredictable gods and
unstable nations, Tandara is a land of shapeshifters and
weather-workers, queens and legends. Ravenous monsters and greedy
bounty hunters patrol unforgiving mountains. Riverboats pulled by
sea-cattle trade down broad waterways. And creatures of nightmare
stalk Raine herself, vicious in the pursuit of her blood.

But Raine isn’t helpless or alone.
She’s part of a band as resourceful as it is odd: a mage-shy
warrior, a tattered wizard, a tenderhearted giant, and a prickly

If she can stay under their protection, she might just live long

Alabama, and grew up climbing trees, searching for sprites and
fairies in the nearby woods, and dreaming of other worlds. The
daughter of an English teacher and a small-town judge, Rushe
developed a love of reading early on, and haunted the school and
local libraries, devouring fairy tales, myths, and tales of
adventure. In the seventh grade, she stumbled across a worn copy of
The Hobbit, and was forever changed. She loves fantasy and
paranormal, but only between the pages of a book—the flying monkeys
in The Wizard of Oz give her the creeps, and she eschews horror
movies. A psychic friend once proclaimed the linen closet in Rushe’s
bedroom a portal to another dimension, and she hasn’t slept well
since. Rushe is a world-class chicken.
