SundaySnippets, #WeekendWarriors, 'Dancing With Fate' - "Don't tell me because I'm a woman I don't know how to fight"

Hello fellow Snippeteers and readers.  Welcome to my Weekend Warriors post. I'm continuing  with another snippet from my fantasy novella, Dancing With Fate. Thank you to everyone who's been following my snippets so far, and been kind enough to comment. Sorry I didn't manage to get around as many blogs last week as I wanted to, it was a really busy week. I'll try to do better this time.

Last week's snippet ...

SNIPPET  (As always, please forgive the creative punctuation to comply with
the ten sentence rule. Very slightly changed from the published version.)

"I would like to see you safe before I fight Madog for the return of my betrothed."

"You needn't worry about me, I have my knife and my bow, I am well able to look after myself. Besides, I'm coming with you, you’ll need someone at your back."

There was such determination in those dark green eyes, Myrddin almost laughed. "Oh, you think I'm the one who needs looking after?"

"Probably, I owe you a favor, you saved me from the Ellylldan, I'll not let you fight alone. Don't tell me because I'm a woman I don't know how to fight, I expect I'm better trained in the use of a bow than you are."

"I don't doubt it," Myrddin replied, trying not to smile, and almost unconsciously, he put his hand on the light sword at his side. "We'll need to leave the horses here and approach the fort by stealth, I don't know how many guards Madog has posted, he must surely know I will come for Gwendolyn."

"Then it's even more important you don't go alone."

  1. They make a good team and he's finally realizing that. I wonder if the woman he's risking so much to rescue appreciates him the same way.

  2. If he can acknowledge her skills, why does he have a problem with her help?

    1. He doesn't, he's just a bit surprised she's changed her mind about going home!

  3. She may be just the woman to save his future.

  4. If he comes with a beautiful woman, it might confuse Madog!

  5. He does seem rather reasonable here. Not too much of a fight against her coming. Perhaps he does see her as an asset after all. Nice snippet!

    1. Oh, he does. He's concerned about her safety, not being aware of who she is, yet.

  6. I think this is really a fascinating situation you've set up here and I'm feeling pretty sure there's a twist ahead, as far as this lady he wants to rescue! Enjoyed the excerpt...

  7. I'm agreeing that it's better to take someone with you than go alone, but I feel like she could handle herself alone if she needed to.

    1. She could indeed, and she's more concerned with looking after him than the other way around. :)

  8. I'd be grateful for her help. Of course he doesn't know who she is.

    1. Exactly, but as you say, he doesn't know who she is, and thinks she's the one who needs protecting! :)

  9. If she's an immortal, does that affect her decision to accompany him into danger?

    1. Possibly, but it's more her obligation to obey Apollo - and of course her attraction to Myrddin!

  10. Ed makes a good point. In her current body, is she vulnerable? Good snippet. I want to read more.

    1. Thanks Diane - she doesn't have her special powers so she is more vulnerable than she would be otherwise, but she knows Apollo wouldn't deliberately send her into danger without any protection and as she tells him, she's pretty good at looking after herself!

  11. Really well-written as I felt like I was there with them, even having not read the lead-up to the scene.
