EXCERPT

BACKGROUND
Cat Kincaid has sworn to avenge her sister’s death by killing the man she believes to be responsible. After her ship is attacked, her escape vessel crash-lands on an unchartered planet and when she sets foot on the planet, with her companion animal—an alien creature called ‘Shifter’—she finds herself caught up in a power-weapon fight. When the firing ceases, she feels compelled to go to the aid of a man wounded in the fight, who seems to have become separated from his companions. When she reaches him she is stunned to recognise him as the man for whom she has searched for five years—Kerry Marchant, second-in-command of the starship Destiny. Although they have never met before she knows him from her extensive search of various hologram-libraries. Reluctantly she attends to his wounds, using his own bio- regenerator, after telling herself she will make him tell her the truth about what happened to her sister, before carrying out her revenge. She also realises that if she keeps him alive, she can use him as a bargaining chip when the other members of his crew return to rescue him.

EXCERPT
He made as if to stand, and in an instant, she drew her pistol.
“Like I said before, no sudden moves. Get up—slowly.”
“So you are making me prisoner?”
“Not exactly, but I’m not stupid enough to take any risks.”
He rose to his feet, his gaze not leaving her gun-hand. Several inches taller than her, broad shouldered and slim, he presented a commanding figure. His expression froze as his gaze homed in on the insignia on her breast pocket, his eyes like chips of blue ice. “You work for the Union.”
“I work for myself.”
“Then why are you wearing the insignia of the Global Union of Earth and Allied Planets?”
“I have a license to requisition any enemy ship trespassing in the sectors of space over which they hold dominion.”
“A licensed pirate in the pay of the Global Union,” Kerry’s eyes showed outright contempt. She almost preferred the icy coolness.
“I prefer to think of myself as a freelancer—doing a service.”
His expression did not change, although he did change tack. “You could have left me to die—or just shot me. Why didn’t you?”
“Call it a personality flaw. I don’t like abandoning someone who’s wounded even to save my own skin. And I don’t kill in cold blood. If I have to shoot someone, I’d rather they were facing me, with their eyes open.” Even if I did swear to leave their dead body for the Union to use in their hideous experiments. Keep it casual. Don’t let him guess what’s really in your mind.
To her amazement, he smiled, the most devastating smile she’d ever seen, and made even more remarkable because he didn’t look as if he did it very often.
“My own philosophy as it happens. It seems almost a pity we are on opposite sides.”
“Opposite sides?”
“I have no love for the Union. That puts us on opposite sides, even if you are just a pirate, doing their dirty work for them.”
She gave him her best withering look. “Fine. And just because I decided to save your hide, don’t get any ideas. We don’t have to like each other.”
“I was merely alluding to the fact we seem to have a similar moral code.”
“I doubt it.”

BELOVED ENEMY BLURB

Cat Kincaid is obsessed with killing the man she believes is responsible for the torture and death of her sister, but when she eventually catches up with him, survival becomes a greater priority than revenge.

Kerry Marchant, haunted by memories, regret, and self-blame, shields himself from the pain of the past by committing himself totally to the starship, Destiny, of which he is part owner. However, the beautiful, red-haired woman who reminds him of his lost love, and who he suspects is working for a corrupt regime, represents a possible threat not only to the ship, but to his heart.

Marooned on an inhospitable planet, they need to work together to stay alive, fighting not only unknown assailants, but their growing attraction. But how can they learn to trust each other when he has vowed never to get close to a woman again, and she made a solemn pledge to destroy him?

SFR Brigade Showcase

Once a month the Science Fiction Romance Brigade authors showcase snippets from new work, WIPs, cover reveals or other fun things.
It's been a good year for the third book in The Destiny Trilogy, 'Beloved Enemy'.
First it was sortlisted for the ROMNAs here in the UK, it finalled for the RONE Awards and I was notified today that the excerpt I submitted to the 'Best Banter' contest is also through to the final round. I'm so thrilled as I really enjoyed writing this series and it's great just to be 'in the running' so to speak in these contests.

You can see 'teaser' I made for Beloved Enemy in the sidebar on the right

EXCERPT

They reached the rock their adversaries had used as a shield. With her finger on the trigger button Cat swung round it, prepared to fire if anyone moved. Then she froze. The area was clear. Not the bodies she expected to find, no sign anyone had ever been there at all.

She looked at Kerry. “They were here. They can’t have just vanished.”

He shook his head. “Unless they can teleport—which has been proven to be impossible by mechanical means. It is just possible they may have psionic
capabilities.”

“No point in worrying about them now. Seems they’ve gone, however they did it.” Cat gave a long low whistle and one of the nearby boulders morphed into the tawny form of Shifter.

“What the hell is that?” As if acting on instinct, Kerry reached for his gun and then swore softly when his fingers failed to close upon it. His gaze flicked toward her. He cursed again and stared pointedly at his blaster thrust through her belt.

She ignored his stare and nodded toward the animal. “His name’s Shifter.
He’s…well, I call him a chameleopard, and I’d kill anyone who tried to shoot him.”

Kerry favoured her with a cold look. “Delightful pets you have.”

“It’s only one, and yes, he is quite cute actually. Are you going to be able to walk?”

“It was my chest that was injured, not my legs.”

She ignored his sarcastic tone. Gratitude obviously did not feature among his finer points.

SFR Brigade showcase The Destiny Trilogy

Once a month the Science Fiction Romance Brigade authors showcase snippets from new work, WIPs, cover reveals or other fun things.

I'm thrilled that the third book in my Trilogy 'The Destiny Trilogy' is a finalist in the RONE Awards (You might just have noticed the  shiny badge in the left hand sidebar  :) (and thanks again to everyone who voted for my book, I feel so honoured and humbled to have got through to the final round.

I love graphics and playing about with them. I'm no expert on Photoshop but I'm gradually learning!

I thought I'd post a a few  pictures I 'manipulated' as background images when I was writing the stories, more for inspiration for myself than anything else, although I do occasionally include them in things like blog posts! The map was drawn using a programme which unfortunately I no longer have access to but I found it very useful for keeping track of my characters' movements.

Map Of Niflheim
Niflheim appears in both Starquest and Children of the Mist and was named by the fictional settlers of this cold and mainly inhospitable planet, from the mythical Norse land of cold and snow.  Parts of it are more temperate though, and suitable for human habitation. Here is a description from Starquest, when  the heroine first sees the chief settlement Gladsheim:

Gladsheim (Starquest
and Children Of The Mist)
Gladsheim is set around the sides of a deep valley. The area in the centre comprises a long, narrow ornamental lake, flanked by mosaic paving with fountains and flowering shrubs. The jagged mountains, which form the walls of the valley, are so high I could scarcely see their snow-covered peaks, which made a sharp contrast to the soft lines and curves of the buildings below. I was surprised to see flowers everywhere, pushing themselves out of the snowy ground as prolifically as anything growing in a more temperate climate.

My first impression of the various dwellings themselves was that they were so graceful they appeared as if the slightest breeze would blow them away. The tall spires and turrets of many of the structures made it look like a scene from a fairy tale, such as the ones pictured in the holobooks I watched as a child. They must have been constructed or overlaid with the same substance as the walls of the caves, since they glowed with a similar soft luminescence, without the need for additional lighting.

Niflheim (Starquest and Children Of The Mist)
The young Nifl lad, who had ridden with us, came forward to lead the ponies away and Gullin gestured to Dahll and me to follow himself and Tamarith. A high, delicate bridge spans the lake, and as we crossed it, it produced a low, musical sound, like little tinkling bells. The shining metal from which it is constructed flashed and sparkled with many colours in the reflected light from the buildings, reminding me of the Rainbow Bridge of Scandinavian mythology. Ranged outside the houses were small groups of Nifls, obviously curious about us. They stood politely aside to let us pass, and some murmured soft words of greeting.

And finally, this is my impression of Robigo, in Beloved  Enemy. The planet shifts and changes but most of the areas where Cat and Kerry find themselves are pretty hot and bleak - quite a contrast to Niflheim!

Weekend Writing Warrior - Sunday Snippet

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warrior and 8 Sentence Sunday, the weekly hops for everyone who loves to read and write! This is a new venture for me but such a great idea -

Writers share an 8 to 10 sentence snippet on Sunday each week. Be sure to visit the other writers - they're listed Below:

My series 'The Destiny Trilogy' started with one character - Kerry Marchant. Each book is a complete story but features some of the same characters. The series began with 'Starquest' and the third in the trilogy is 'Beloved Enemy (currently nominated for a RONE Award😊)  Although Kerry is not the main character Starquest, he is my favourite. He doesn't feature in the second book but stars in the third one! I thought it would be nice to introduce him to folk who may not have read the books, so here are ten sentences from Starquest.

(Jess, the main character has just been rescued from her stricken starship by the Destiny)

"When we received your distress signal, we ran a computer analysis. The conclusions were obvious. The only option was for you to abandon her (the ship) before her drive reached critical.”

The stern-faced man turned to look at her now. His blue eyes, cool as gunmetal, fixed on her until she felt herself blush under his relentless scrutiny. He smiled slowly, as if unaccustomed to such an action. He was, in fact, very attractive when he smiled. “Welcome aboard.”

The commander nodded in his direction. “Let me introduce Kerry Marchant, second-in-command.”

Although Jess still could not help feeling a little suspicious, she managed to smile back at him with a degree of confidence she did not feel.

If you haven't voted yet, MAY 7th
IS THE LAST DAY TO VOTE!
Only a select few will go forward to the next round so votes would be so much
appreciated!

Beloved Enemy's Birthday!

Can you believe it's a year since Beloved Enemy was published!
To celebrate I designed a new 'teaser' above to go with these two:

I have to admit I enjoy playing with graphics, so I'll be doing some more for Beloved Enemy when I get some time - but I must finish my current WIP which is a ghost story and a bit of a departure from Science Fiction, but I have some more SFs on the 'back burner'.

I'm looking forward to the RoNa Awards in London on Monday when I'll get to meet the other nominees, including those in my category, Christine Courtenay, Jan Jones and Kate Johnson. I'm a bit nervous as I've never been to a Romance Novelists event before but it should be a lovely, sparkly evening!

I thought I'd share the first chapter of Beloved Enemy with you (It's already on my sidebar but in case you missed it, here's the link):

On the RNA Blog Today...the Paranormal/Speculative Fiction Rona Awards

This year’s shortlisted novels include space adventures, timeslip, and a ghost story, and include two independently published novels. ...

For the first time ever there is a paranormal category.
The other three finalists   in this category are Christine Courtenay, Kate Johnson and Jan Jones and I am so thrilled to be included with such wonderful, talented authors, with the latest in the Destiny Trilogy - Beloved Enemy!

There are five other categories: Contemporary, Epic, Historical, Romantic Comedy and Young Adult, plus the RoNA Rose for shorter fiction. So many wonderful books in the running. The awards will be announced at the RNA  Awards Ceremony on the 13th March  by guest presenter Prue Leith. Although I'm not really expecting to get any further with such great authors in the running, wish me and Kerry and Cat luck!

Here is a brief excerpt from Beloved Enemy

He pulled her back toward him and looked deep into her eyes.Something she saw in those blue depths struck her heart. The pain that never left them went so deep. This man bore scars far worse than the physical one running faintly below his left eye…worse even than the mental scars she harboured herself.

Almost without thinking, she put her hands on each side of his face and pressed her lips to his in a brief kiss, then drew back. For a moment he hesitated, before pulling her close again, so close she gasped. He brushed his thumb along her lips, until she parted them in surrender. A shockwave like electricity ran through her, sending her senses reeling in the ecstasy of the moment. She’d sworn never to let a man betray her again. Every man she’d ever known, even her own father, had let her down, lied to her, and deceived her. Yet at this moment, with this man, every nerve in her body ached with sweet desire.

Beloved Enemy - Teaser

Looking forward to the RNA RoNA Awards on 13th March
(Did I mention Beloved Enemy is on the shortlist for the Paranormal/Speculative Romance Category? ðŸ˜‰

Anyway there the other authors in the category are amazing so I'm not counting any chickens, I'm just thrilled to have got on the shortlist, but I thought I'd give a taster of the book over the next few weeks to celebrate the fact that it will be Beloved Enemy's first birthday on 11th March!

Excerpt from BELOVED ENEMY

He looked around, his face expressionless.
She frowned at his perusal. The furnishings of the small interior were necessarily sparse. A pilot seat and passenger seat to the front, and at the rear of the vessel, a small living and storage area, complete with a folding table and murphy bunk unit. If he didn’t like it, too bad. He could always go back outside and sleep rough if he
preferred.

“I dare say it will suffice,” he said at length.

“Well, thank you. I’m so glad it meets with your approval.”

His expression remained impassive. It seemed her cynicism was lost on him.

“It would be useful to have a name to call you.”

“Catrina. Catrina…Kincaid. I prefer to be called Cat.”

Again, that stunning smile spread over his face, and she noticed how his eyes seemed even bluer above the even, white teeth. Damn, there was something about him. She almost regretted she’d have to kill him eventually.

“The name suits you.” It did not sound like a compliment. “I am Kerry Marchant.”

“Yes, I know who you are.” She ignored his quizzical look. “As I said earlier, don’t get any ideas. This ‘cat’ has claws.

Exciting News about Beloved Enemy!

I am thrilled to announce that BELOVED ENEMY is shortlisted in the Paranormal or Speculative Romance Novel category, of the Romantic Novelists Association's Romance Novel Of The Year Award. There are seven categories and the Paranormal/Speculative Romance one is for romantic novels that include elements beyond the range of scientific explanation, whether paranormal, fantasy, science fiction, time slip or worlds that include ghosts, vampires or creatures of legend. I don't for a minute expect to get any further, the other writers shortlisted are all amazing, but I'm really happy to be included in such prestigious company and looking forward to the Awards Ceremony in London on 13th March, when I will be able to meet many of the RNA members for the first time. New Review for Beloved Enemy

Received a lovely four and a half star review for Beloved Enemy, from Mr N at POTL

"This book was an amazingly enjoyable read!  I had no idea that this was the third book of a series.  This was a fantastic stand alone that can be read without having read the first two of the series. I was immediately drawn to Cat (and Shifter) and Kerry.  The characters were so well written that the reader quickly developed a feeling for them.  I loved the twists and turns as they existed on the planet.  A fan of sci fi will just love this book...."

Interplanetary Summer - TWRP Summer Reads Blog Hop

I'm delighted to be part of The Wild Rose Press Authors Summer Treats and Reads Blog Hop. A bevy of WRP authors are taking part.  I hope you enjoy the blog hop. Please visit the various authors' blogs and if you can spare a few moments, leave a comment (we all love comments) Don't forget to enter the Rafflecopter contest for your chance to win a fabulous Kindle Fire donated by The Wild Rose Press.

Many authors are offering additional prize on their own blogs. I'm thrilled to have published the third in my futuristic series  this year, so I am offering a free download of Starquest,  the first book in the series to a random commenter on this blog.

The theme of this blog hop, is of course, summer treats. I think most of us enjoy the lazy, hazy days of summer as it says in the popular song. Here in the UK, it usually falls on a Tuesday in July (only kidding). Although our summers are a bit 'hit and miss' over here, we usually have a few days during the summer months when the sun shines, the skies are blue and the countryside is full of summer scents and colour.

One of my favourite summer treats is spending time with my two horses, Harri and T'pau.  Sadly a hip injury means I can no longer ride, but there are still plenty of things to do with them, and we are all enjoying our 'retirement'.  I also like taking my little rescued dog for long walks in the countryside.

As I write science fiction romance, I started wondering what summer is like on some of my imaginary planets.  Osind, a planet featured in Starquest is, on the face of it, a beautiful place to spend the summer - but beware, it has hidden secrets, and the charismatic lord who lives in the castle on the clifftop is not all he seems either!
Niflheim, which is an important location in both Starquest and Children Of The Mist, the first two books in the Destiny trilogy, is a misty, icy planet, but parts of the planet are less hostile and the Earth colonists love their snowy home, which even in the summer looks more like a day in early spring on Earth, although the snow is not as thick as in the winter, and delicate flowers grow in the gardens of the settlements.

In contrast, Robigo, the main planet in my third book 'Beloved Enemy' is very hot and much of the landscape is covered in sand dunes and although there is plenty of sand, it's not the kind of landscape one would want to sunbathe on. In fact my two main characters, Cat and Kerry spend most of their time trying to get away from the planet - but it's not that easy!

So how do you imagine summer on other planets? Or do you prefer to stay on good old Earth? Don't forget to leave a comment and at the end of the Blog hop I'll draw a winner for 'Starquest'. The first book in the series.

I'll leave you with a picture of Kerry Marchant, the lead character in 'Beloved Enemy' (as portrayed by the fantastic Jimmy Thomas  my favourite summer treat at the moment, LOL)

If you like the idea of spending a little summer time in a 'galaxy' far, far away, I invite you to check out
The Destiny Trilogy at my Wild Rose Press Author Page
