Snippet Sunday: Starquest - Time to get things out in the open!

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warrior and 8 Sentence Sunday, the weekly hop for everyone who loves to read and write! We've got a variety of genres and talented writers just waiting for you to come sample their work.

Writers share an 8 to 10 sentence snippet on Sunday each week. Be sure to visit the other writers - they're listed Below:

If you'd to share your own 8-10 sentence snippet, whether published or not, follow the link and sign up. It's a great community to be a part of!

I'm currently sharing snippets from Starquest, the first book in the SF Romance series,  The Destiny Trilogy.
Thanks so much to everyone who's commented to date. (I was away at the RNA conference last week so had to miss a week but I'll try to catch up on last week's posts if I can. I decided to put in an additional snippet this week, so here we go -

Summary of snippets so far:

Having been rescued from her sabotaged starship by the crew of the Destiny, Jess has persuaded them to help her save the inhabitants of the planet Phidia from a cruel invader by the name of Ayandos. Kerry Marchant, the ship's second in command, has had to revise his initial mistrust of her. He is also somewhat stunned on learning that far from being the deceitful character he'd thought her, she is not only on a mission to save a planet, but is in fact an interstellar missionary - and he's finding it hard to deny that he is becoming rather more than attracted to her!

Punctuation slightly Edited from published version to keep within sentence count.

In this excerpt Jess attempts to ease the awkwardness between herself and Kerry.

They could not go on like this until they reached Phidia.

“Look, I know you and I haven’t exactly hit it off. I can understand why you didn’t trust me, but now you know my reasons for not being honest with you in the first place, can we at least attempt to get along? Can’t we try to...just...be friends?”

“Oh, no, Jess. I doubt if you and I could ever just be friends.”

So he would not even give her that. She was about to make a sharp retort, when she saw the expression in his eyes, the way he looked at her, and realised with a feeling of shocked disbelief, what he was implying.

He closed the space between them, placing a hand on her arm, and, taken by surprise, she dropped her guard, trembling at his touch. His blue eyes searched hers, as if determined to see the truth she tried to hide from him...and she knew he would find it, for she could conceal nothing from him now. She closed her eyes, conscious that it was already too late. Very gently, he stroked her face with the back of his fingers, before placing his hands on her shoulders, drawing her even closer to him.

“You said I needed no one and nothing except myself,” he went on slowly, taking both her hands in his. “I thought it was true, but you were wrong, Jess, although I did not realise it until now.”

BLURB: When Jestine Darnell is rescued from her sabotaged starship by the crew of the Destiny her only objective is to complete her mission and keep her promise to save a world from slavery. Love is the last thing on her mind. However, she has not counted on losing her heart to Kerry Marchant the ship’s second in command, who makes his distrust of her painfully obvious, despite the chemistry between them. The completion of her mission has consequences that neither of them could have foreseen.

Enter Dahll Tarron, who becomes involved in a long and dangerous quest to find the Destiny. Fates become intertwined, perils shared, culminating in the realization that sometimes love may be so close that there is a danger it will not be recognized until it is too late…

RNA Conference

It's hard to believe that just a week ago I was at the  R N A Conference at Harper Adams University, Shropshire.

It was a packed weekend with talks and workshops that were both enlightening, interesting and entertaining.
I  attended some great talks, among them Janet Gover’ talking about how to manipulate pictures, which I have to admit is something I enjoy playing about with myself!  Then there was a fascinating talk given by Christina Cortenay and Anna Belfrage, who discussed time slip versus time travel. Then there was the panel on how to please (or not to annoy) your editor/publisher...
and I could go on, there was just so much information out there at this conference!

We had a wonderful gala dinner on Saturday evening and wine flowed freely and the food was delicious.

My books in great company on tbe bookstall!
This was my first RNA conference and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I learnt a lot, including what to do and what not to do on social media, and how to use graphics etc, etc. I met some old friends and some whom I had only met on-line before. Altogether a fantastic weekend!

Release day for Somewhere My Lady by Beth Trisel

It's a pleasure to welcome fellow Wild Rose Press author Beth Trisel to then Flight Deck, today, Good morning, Beth and congratulations on your latest release.

Thanks for having me on your blog, Hywela, to share my new release, Somewhere My Lady (Book 1, Ladies in Time). I’m delighted to be writing time travels again. They suit my flighty attention span. History fascinates me, and I enjoy researching different eras, but I also love mixing in fantasy and the paranormal. Somewhere My Lady is an unusual time travel.
I’m drawn to old homes and have lived in them most of my life, also visited many. Old homes exude an indefinable sense of place, and are never really empty. Perhaps the spirits of those who once dwelt there come back and visit, or leave a part of themselves behind. I don't know, but I like a good ghost story. An avid gardener, I have sprawling beds filled with heirloom flowers and herbs. Some plants have been here for ages and our farm-house was built in the 1870's. Lovely gardens and herbs feature in the story so inhale deeply as you read.
Harrison Hall, the colonial era home in Somewhere My Lady, is loosely based on Shirley Plantation, a magnificent 18th century home, built along the James River in Virginia. In the story, this wonderful manor sized house is a paranormal hot spot, concealing a deadly mystery Hart and Lorna must solve.

‘Somewhere My Lady is a fun supernatural romance that will have you slipping in and out of the past and future as if you were a spirit yourself.’’ ~Colleen’s Book Reviews

Story Blurb:
Lorna Randolph is hired for the summer at Harrison Hall in Virginia, where Revolutionary-War re-enactors provide guided tours of the elegant old home. She doesn't expect to receive a note and a kiss from the handsome young man who then vanishes into mist.

Harrison Hall itself has plans for Lorna – and for Hart Harrison, her momentary suitor and its 18th century heir. Past and present are bound by pledges of love, and modern science melds with old skills and history as Harrison Hall takes Lorna and Hart through time in a race to solve a mystery and save Hart's life before the Midsummer Ball.~

Excerpt:

Something about him held her spellbound…the tilt of his head, arch of his brow, glimpse of his profile… She followed his every move with the fixity of an owl.

He turned blue-gray eyes toward her and sensuous lips curved into a smile on his handsome face. Hands down. No contest. He was the hottest guy ever. Her heart beat a thrilling new rhythm.

He circled closer to where she stood rooted in the foyer, not moving a toe, scarcely drawing breath. Did he truly see her backed tremulously against the wall, or did it only feel that way?

Unlike the others in the ghostly assembly, his eyes didn’t skirt past her. He paused in the dance. Bending at the shoulders, he tipped his hand to her in a genteel flourish.

He’d freakin’ bowed. Her jaw dropped. He most definitely saw her. And she sure as heck saw him.

A sparking sizzle jumped between them, awakening her as she’d never been roused before. Even more than when the house charged through her at her arrival. It was as if she were plugged in—to him.

How that could be, she had no idea, but when he gazed into her eyes, time seemed to stop. She spiraled into moonless stars, and back again to this dizzying realm. To him. Even if she were dreaming, she’d never forget this moment.~

Somewhere My Lady is available from all major online booksellers. In Kindle at: https://www.amazon.com/Somewhere-Lady-Ladies-Time-Book-ebook/dp/B071VTNC7V

Author Bio: Married to my high school sweetheart, I live on a farm in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia surrounded by my human family and furbabies. An avid gardener, my love of herbs and heirloom plants figures into my work. The rich history of Virginia, the Native

Americans, and the people who journeyed here from far beyond her borders are at the heart of my inspiration. I’m especially drawn to colonial America and the drama of the American Revolution. And I love a good ghost story. In addition to Young Adult and New Adult fantasy romance, I also write historical, time travel, and paranormal romance, plus nonfiction.

Once again, congratulations, Beth, it's been fascinating hearing about 'Somewhere my Lady' and I have to agree - I always feel old buildings somehow absorb the essence of people who've lived in them!  (Beautiful cover, by the way!)

An exciting weekend!

I had a busy and exciting weekend!  First of all I took part in a panel with three other authors at our local literary festival - Beaconlit.

The discussion  was entitled ‘What’s in a Genre?’  and was a lively debate about Women's Fiction (i.e. 'Romance') with Jean Fullerton, Christina Jones, with moderator Rowan Coleman leading the discussion and keeping us all in order.  It was very well attended and we had some interesting questions from the floor. There were many events going on throughout the day, and it was a great day out for readers and writers alike. I even sold some books!

Then as soon as it was over, my hubby and I were off to an evening party for our next door neighbours wedding. The location was a local farm and we had a fantastic time. It was a beautiful, sunny evening and we all sat outside on bales of straw, munching on the hog roast, pizza, chocolate cake and icecream! There was dancing and music in the barn, which was all decked out in fairy lights

(Sorry the pictures are a bit blurry, not sure why, but all in all it was a great evening!

Next weekend should be exciting too, as I'm off to the Romance Novelists Association Conference in Shropshire. Really looking forward to it!
