EXCERPT

BACKGROUND
Cat Kincaid has sworn to avenge her sister’s death by killing the man she believes to be responsible. After her ship is attacked, her escape vessel crash-lands on an unchartered planet and when she sets foot on the planet, with her companion animal—an alien creature called ‘Shifter’—she finds herself caught up in a power-weapon fight. When the firing ceases, she feels compelled to go to the aid of a man wounded in the fight, who seems to have become separated from his companions. When she reaches him she is stunned to recognise him as the man for whom she has searched for five years—Kerry Marchant, second-in-command of the starship Destiny. Although they have never met before she knows him from her extensive search of various hologram-libraries. Reluctantly she attends to his wounds, using his own bio- regenerator, after telling herself she will make him tell her the truth about what happened to her sister, before carrying out her revenge. She also realises that if she keeps him alive, she can use him as a bargaining chip when the other members of his crew return to rescue him.

EXCERPT
He made as if to stand, and in an instant, she drew her pistol.
“Like I said before, no sudden moves. Get up—slowly.”
“So you are making me prisoner?”
“Not exactly, but I’m not stupid enough to take any risks.”
He rose to his feet, his gaze not leaving her gun-hand. Several inches taller than her, broad shouldered and slim, he presented a commanding figure. His expression froze as his gaze homed in on the insignia on her breast pocket, his eyes like chips of blue ice. “You work for the Union.”
“I work for myself.”
“Then why are you wearing the insignia of the Global Union of Earth and Allied Planets?”
“I have a license to requisition any enemy ship trespassing in the sectors of space over which they hold dominion.”
“A licensed pirate in the pay of the Global Union,” Kerry’s eyes showed outright contempt. She almost preferred the icy coolness.
“I prefer to think of myself as a freelancer—doing a service.”
His expression did not change, although he did change tack. “You could have left me to die—or just shot me. Why didn’t you?”
“Call it a personality flaw. I don’t like abandoning someone who’s wounded even to save my own skin. And I don’t kill in cold blood. If I have to shoot someone, I’d rather they were facing me, with their eyes open.” Even if I did swear to leave their dead body for the Union to use in their hideous experiments. Keep it casual. Don’t let him guess what’s really in your mind.
To her amazement, he smiled, the most devastating smile she’d ever seen, and made even more remarkable because he didn’t look as if he did it very often.
“My own philosophy as it happens. It seems almost a pity we are on opposite sides.”
“Opposite sides?”
“I have no love for the Union. That puts us on opposite sides, even if you are just a pirate, doing their dirty work for them.”
She gave him her best withering look. “Fine. And just because I decided to save your hide, don’t get any ideas. We don’t have to like each other.”
“I was merely alluding to the fact we seem to have a similar moral code.”
“I doubt it.”

BELOVED ENEMY BLURB

Cat Kincaid is obsessed with killing the man she believes is responsible for the torture and death of her sister, but when she eventually catches up with him, survival becomes a greater priority than revenge.

Kerry Marchant, haunted by memories, regret, and self-blame, shields himself from the pain of the past by committing himself totally to the starship, Destiny, of which he is part owner. However, the beautiful, red-haired woman who reminds him of his lost love, and who he suspects is working for a corrupt regime, represents a possible threat not only to the ship, but to his heart.

Marooned on an inhospitable planet, they need to work together to stay alive, fighting not only unknown assailants, but their growing attraction. But how can they learn to trust each other when he has vowed never to get close to a woman again, and she made a solemn pledge to destroy him?

#WeWriWar, Snippet Sunday - Children Of The Mist: Vidarh is in trouble!

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warrior and 8 Sentence Sunday, the weekly hop for everyone who loves to read and write! We've got a variety of genres and talented writers just waiting for you to come sample their work.

Writers share an 8 to 10 sentence snippet on Sunday each week. Be sure to visit the other writers - they're listed below:

If you'd to share your own 8-10 sentence snippet, whether published or not, follow the link and sign up. It's a great community to be a part of!

I'm currently sharing excerpts from Children Of The Mist the second book in
The Destiny Trilogy. This is set on Niflheim, a planet close to the heart of Jess, who features in the first book. The heroine is one of her closeat friends, Tamarith.

Thanks so much to everyone who has been following this series, and left comments xx

This snippet carries on a bit further from last week's snippet which you can read
HERE

Vidarh is on his way to Gladsheim, the capital city of the icy planet Niflheim. A telepath, like all Nifls, he is being guided by Tamarith, through the treacherous mountain passages. (A little licence with punctuation to keep within the sentence limit.)

Vidarh noticed several gigantic, human-like statues on the banks as he passed, but had no time to contemplate or admire them. Rounding a bend, he came upon a wall of water ahead, cascading from the roof in a fury of white froth. The torrent boiled and raced. He gritted his teeth as he headed into the maelstrom, there was no way he could control the boat's frantic motions as it heaved and bucked like an unbroken colt. He threw down the paddle, gripped the sides of the vessel, and sent a desperate message through the ether.

Tamarith, I'm in trouble. Please—send me images of your location, quickly, I need to know what it looks like where you are.

The raging current tossed the boat around with relentless fury. All Vidarh's attention focussed on maintaining contact with Tamarith, and even his finely-tuned powers could not prevent the craft from capsizing. Gasping as he hit the icy flood, he struck out with his arms in desperation, and tried to keep the watery demons from pulling him under.

BLURB
Two minds united against a common foe. Two hearts afraid to show their love: Long ago Tamarith fell in love with a man she can never have, and is convinced she will never love another. However, she cannot help but be intrigued by a handsome stranger whose psychic powers exceed even her own.

Vidarh seeks only to find his true purpose in life and to win the regard of his father, who eschews his son’s psychic abilities. Thrown together by a common threat to their planet, then torn apart by an evil greater than any they could have imagined, can Vidarh save the lovely Nifl woman who has captivated him, before it is too late?

Will Tamarith and Vidarh overcome the deadly enemy who threatens to destroy all they know and love? Will they find the happiness they both seek? Or are they fated to live their lives alone?

#WeekendWritingWarriors -Snippet Sunday - Eight Sentence Sunday

Before I start this week's post I just want to reach out to everyone who was or is about to be in Irma's path. We are so lucky here in the UK, with no such extremes of weather, however much we may complain about it sometimes.

I hope you will stay safe and that the damage to property and possessions will not be too great. Possessions and even buildings can be replaced  - but lives cannot. Do what ever you can to be safe as the hurricane rages- my thoughts and prayers are with you.

After walking for so long he began to think the tunnel he followed led nowhere, the luminosity grew stronger, and the passage opened out into a large amphitheatre. The light reflected back from the walls revealed seats, formed out of pale green stone, arranged in tiers forming a semi-circle. At one end was a pool, shimmering in the soft light. Multi-colored stalactites glistened like jewelled candelabra from the roof of the cave. At the far end was a high dais flanked on each side by another passage.

Vidarh paused for only a moment to take in the beauty around him.. He was familiar with the Conference Chamber of the community of Gladsheim. His mind had been there many times but this was the first time he had physically entered the place. Instructed to take the left fork, he progressed along the labyrinths, noting the downward slope of the passage.

WeWriWa - Jess's confession.

I'm currently sharing snippets from Starquest, the first book in the SF Romance series,  Destiny Trilogy.

Jess has been rescued from her crippled ship by the crew of the Destiny but Kerry Marchant, the ship's second in command does not trust her and demands to know the truth.

You can read last week's snippet HERE

Kerry's confrontation with Jess is  overheard by the ship's Commander, Jon Quinlan, and he orders them both to his cabin, where Jess tells her story and explains that she is desperate to help the people of the planet Phidia.

Her voice took on an edge as she went on. “Their main settlement, Mirrahn, has been taken over by invaders from the Omega Quadrant, led by a mutant warlord known as Ayandos. He has tremendous power over his own people as well as the Phidians, it’s something akin to hypnosis, they seem to obey him mindlessly. He plans to bring in more ships and take over the planet.”

She clenched her fists until her knuckles whitened. “He’s ripping up the land to get at her ores and precious stones and has made slaves of her inhabitants. Worse than this, though, he intends to make Phidia the prime medical centre for that part of the galaxy. They’ve made tremendous advances in cloning, nano and transplant surgery, bio-regeneration and preventive medicine among other things, he intends to grow rich on their knowledge.”

“Surely,” Jon put in quietly, “it mightn’t be such a bad thing for the Phidians to share their knowledge with other worlds and civilisations?”

“They always have, that’s how Ayandos was able to take control so easily. They have never tried to prevent anyone from visiting the planet, and their services are available to anyone who needs them. Now, with Ayandos as dictator, only the wealthiest will be able to afford treatment.” She pushed back her hair and met his gaze. “I’ve known these people a long time – I’ve grown to love them and they trust me. They begged me to fetch help before it’s too late.”

I'm currently posting snippets from Starquest, Volume 1 in the Destiny Trilogy Destiny.  The more she gets to know the crew, the more she feels uneasy about Kerry Marchant, the ship's second in command. (Kerry also appears in the third book, Beloved Enemy and I thought you might like to see a picture of him other
than the one on the cover of that book. (You might notice that he bears an uncanny resemblance to a certain Jimmy Thomas 😉

(although all three books can be read as 'standalones') Jess, who has been rescued from her crippled ship by the starship

“You are rather a long way from home,” Kerry Marchant remarked archly, “considering how small your ship was.”

“She was a Category ‘A’ hyperspeedster.” Jess tossed back her long hair, a hint of pride in her voice as she defended her lost ship. He was right though, she was a long way from Earth. She searched for a plausible explanation. “I’m a...a trader. I was returning from...” she hesitated again, “from Aquarius Seven.”

“Really?”

Was it her imagination, or was there something more than polite interest in Kerry’s voice? She sensed he somehow knew she’d lied about her origins.

Beloved Enemy's Birthday!

Can you believe it's a year since Beloved Enemy was published!
To celebrate I designed a new 'teaser' above to go with these two:

I have to admit I enjoy playing with graphics, so I'll be doing some more for Beloved Enemy when I get some time - but I must finish my current WIP which is a ghost story and a bit of a departure from Science Fiction, but I have some more SFs on the 'back burner'.

I'm looking forward to the RoNa Awards in London on Monday when I'll get to meet the other nominees, including those in my category, Christine Courtenay, Jan Jones and Kate Johnson. I'm a bit nervous as I've never been to a Romance Novelists event before but it should be a lovely, sparkly evening!

I thought I'd share the first chapter of Beloved Enemy with you (It's already on my sidebar but in case you missed it, here's the link):

Another five star review for 'Starquest'

I just found this lovely review for Starquest, by the same reviewer who was kind enough to review the next book in the series 'Children Of The Mist. Reviews are so important to an author, and it's worth all the hard work when someone is kind enough to say they enjoyed one's story. a review like this truly makes my day and I want to thank everyone who takes the time to review any of my books - and those of my fellow authors too, it means the world to us.

"This was a well-written science fiction novel with a healthy dose of romance. There were twists that I didn't see coming and that I really liked which would make this a superior book in any genre. I thought the world building was excellent; each new planet had very definite characteristics, scenery, animal and plant life, and customs that clearly differentiated it from others in space. The main character, Jess, is a pilot on a mission to save a planet that was conquered by a militant race and enlists the aid of another spaceship to help her. It is when that mission is accomplished that things go awry and Jess sets off on another mission to find her lover with the aid of another pilot Dahll.
In some ways this book reminded me of Marion Zimmer Bradley's Darkover series which I love. I would heartily recommend this book. I already have the next one in the series, Children of the Mist, on my reader and can't wait to read it."

Thank you so much for your lovely review, Mainer, I'm so glad you enjoyed 'Starquest' and really appreciate you taking the time to leave a review.
