Dr. Nikki Bell’s plan to discover intelligent life hits a rocky start when her spaceship crashes on the icy surface of Europa. Seconds before she blacks out, she spies a man’s face in the water beneath the ice. When she wakes on the submarine Station, nobody believes her story. Convinced the mysterious stranger saved her life, Nikki searches for him while she explores the ocean and its alien inhabitants.

Kiron Arqin Ramis chose exile as a Watcher on a remote outpost to redeem his family’s honor. He never expected to find an attractive Earther woman close to death. He violates the prime policy by rescuing her. Despite suffering the penalty, he strives to warn her about his hostile leaders.

Nikki’s unexpected meeting with Kiron triggers a chain of disasters in Europa’s perilous oceans. Can the daredevil scientist and scarred Watcher forge a new alliance despite their people’s antagonism?

Excerpt

Water rippled. Giant bivalves clacked shut on all sides. A large object loomed in the darkness. A monstrous siork propelled by long fins like a winged serpent moved into the blue glow of the mollusks. Its enormous fang-filled mouth gaped three times the length of a man. Biting her lip, Nikki eased her zapper from the holster. Her hiding place seemed a fragile and inadequate protection against this monster.

The green skinned man whirled toward Nikki. Diving into the same shelter, he knocked her to the ground and dropped beside her. Jolted by the impact, she blinked at his face, faintly visible in the blue luminescence. His eyes widened a fraction, and he gave a wry smile of recognition. Pinning her down with one arm, he gripped his harpoon and stared out.

Waves surged against the giant mollusks, rocking their shelter. The blue glow faded. Above them, the monstrous beast bashed against the shells. A loud snap indicated a cracked shell. Swirls of blue-green blood spurted across their view as the siork crushed its victim.

Her heart thumping in terror, Nikki cowered next to the strange man. Long minutes later, the roiling waves calmed as the giant predator moved away.

The man stood, gripped her elbow, and pulled Nikki onto her feet. The diagonal slits of his gills pulsed open and closed on the sides of his deep chest. His intense gaze flicked up and down, appraising her figure in a rapid glance. Settling on her face, his green eyes warmed in admiration. He smiled. The handsome smile she remembered so well.

Flushed in triumph, Nikki gave a silent laugh. She had located her mysterious rescuer, and they were grinning at each other like fools.

Last excerpt from Starquest - is this the end?

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warrior and 8 Sentence Sunday, the weekly hop for everyone who loves to read and write! We've got a variety of genres and talented writers just waiting for you to come sample their work.

Writers share an 8 to 10 sentence snippet on Sunday each week. Be sure to visit the other writers - they're listed Below:

If you'd to share your own 8-10 sentence snippet, whether published or not, follow the link and sign up. It's a great community to be a part of!
I'm currently sharing excerpts from Starquest, the first of the Destiny Trilogy

(Please don't hate me - things are not always as they seem, and this is actually just the beginning, there is a lot more of this book left, but I'll be starting on book 2 next week!)

Previously: Jess and Kerry have confessed their love to each other and Jess has persuaded the crew of the starship Destiny, to help her overcome the invaders of the planet Phidia.

When they arrive on the planet, Jess saves Kerry' s life, taking the laser fire aimed at Kerry by the alien invader, Ayandos.

Fast forward a little -  Kerry kills Ayados, and with the battle raging all around him, kneels beside Jess.

(Punctuation edits from published version to comply with sentence count.)
STARQUEST - 10 Sentence Snippet:

A smear of blood glistened on her lips...a stain on perfection and evidence of his own negligence.

“Please...”

He should have prevented this, somehow, he should have prevented it! He ran his fingers through the mass of flame-colored hair, golden highlights gleaming in the Phidian sunshine. He buried his face in its softness and held her close to his heart, hoping that somehow his words might filter through to her subconscious mind, as her life slowly ebbed away.

“Forgive me, Jess. I love you, I always will...always. I could never tell you how
much.”

An instinctive sense of danger pierced his grief. He whirled and rolled over his shoulder, just in time to avoid the laser aimed at his back. The blaster he picked up from close to where Jess had fallen made short and bloody work of his would-be assassin, but it seemed even Jess’s last moments were to be denied him. He was compelled to leave her and concentrate on destroying the assailants who came at him from all sides.

End Note: The Destiny's crew do defeat Ayandos's men, with the help of the Phidians themselves but as I said at the beginning - this is just the start !

Is this really the end for Jess?
How will Kerry cope without her?
Will the Phidians repay the crew for saving them from the invaders?

STARQUEST (The Destiny Trilogy, Vol. 1)

BLURB: When Jestine Darnell is rescued from her sabotaged starship by the crew of the Destiny her only objective is to complete her mission and keep her promise to save a world from slavery. Love is the last thing on her mind. However, she has not counted on losing her heart to Kerry Marchant the ship’s second in command, who makes his distrust of her painfully obvious, despite the chemistry between them. The completion of her mission has consequences that neither of them could have foreseen.

Enter Dahll Tarron, who becomes involved in a long and dangerous quest to find the Destiny. Fates become intertwined, perils shared, culminating in the realization that sometimes love may be so close that there is a danger it will not be recognized until it is too late…

I'm currently posting snippets from Starquest, Volume 1 in the Destiny Trilogy . Jestine Darnell has been rescued from her crippled starship by the crew of the starship Destiny and is gradually finding her place as one of the crew.

Jess is on the Flight Deck having a somewhat awkward conversation with Kerry Marchant, the second in command.

“Kerry, don’t you believe in anything?”

“Oh, yes,” he replied, giving her a very direct look. "Myself and this ship, and the technology that enabled us to design and build her.”

“And there’s no room in your life for the concept of the Universal Spirit...you think this whole universe was created by accident?”

“I know it goes against all the rulings of the Union, with their insistence on blind obedience to the ‘Universal Spirit,’ but I trust only in the things I know and can control. I do not waste my time on fantasy or myths.”

“It must be very gratifying to be so self-sufficient you need no one and nothing but yourself,” Jess said, without trying to suppress the note of scornful resignation in her voice.

“It avoids disappointment.”

She shook her head disparagingly and rose to leave the flight deck, taking one last look at the observation panel. To her consternation, Kerry caught hold of her by the shoulder and pushed her firmly back into her seat, standing over her with an attitude of grim resolve.

“Not so fast, you have some explaining to do.”

I'm currently posting snippets from Starquest, Volume 1 in the Destiny Trilogy . Jestine Darnell has been rescued from her crippled starship by the crew of the Destiny and is gradually finding her place as one of the crew. However, she has a secret, a secret she needs to confess to the Commander Jon Quinlan, before KerryMarchant, the ship's second in command voices the suspicions she knows he harbors.

The ship cruised under the control of the main computer, and as so often seemed to happen, she found herself alone on the flight deck with Kerry. Was it coincidence, or was he keeping an eye on her--why else would he be working while everyone else enjoyed their leisure time?

He sat nearby, at one of the consoles, checking the coordinates for the next jump through hyperspace.  This would bring them to a previously unexplored sector of space, and the planet Dakkon. Without making it obvious she was looking at him, she watched as he ran his long, slim fingers over Metisa's configuration panels.
Although the computer received and relayed most of its information verbally, there were certain functions for which Common Universal had its limitations as a computer language.

Kerry’s hands fascinated her--she felt such hands should belong to an artist or a musician, not to this stern, logical man who seemed interested only in the ship and its computers. She turned her attention back to the observation panel and came to a decision. She’d waited long enough to find the right moment to tell Jon about Phidia, and to confess to taking the blaster. She’d tried to return it, but that had proven more difficult than stealing it in the first place.

I'm currently posting snippets from Starquest, Volume 1 in the Destiny Trilogy Destiny.  The more she gets to know the crew, the more she feels uneasy about Kerry Marchant, the ship's second in command. (Kerry also appears in the third book, Beloved Enemy and I thought you might like to see a picture of him other
than the one on the cover of that book. (You might notice that he bears an uncanny resemblance to a certain Jimmy Thomas 😉

(although all three books can be read as 'standalones') Jess, who has been rescued from her crippled ship by the starship

“You are rather a long way from home,” Kerry Marchant remarked archly, “considering how small your ship was.”

“She was a Category ‘A’ hyperspeedster.” Jess tossed back her long hair, a hint of pride in her voice as she defended her lost ship. He was right though, she was a long way from Earth. She searched for a plausible explanation. “I’m a...a trader. I was returning from...” she hesitated again, “from Aquarius Seven.”

“Really?”

Was it her imagination, or was there something more than polite interest in Kerry’s voice? She sensed he somehow knew she’d lied about her origins.

Writers share an 8 to 10 sentence snippet on Sunday each week. Be sure to visit the other writers - they're listed Below:

Last week's snippet  was from Starquest, Volume 1 in the Destiny Trilogy (although all three books can be read as 'standalones') introduced Jess, who is rescued from her crippled ship by the starship Destiny, commanded by Jon Quinlan. Gradually she gets to know the crew and grows to like and respect Jon and most of the crew while still being a little unsure of how far she can actually trust them.

Snippet from Chapter 1 of Starquest (slight editing for clarity and to keep within the word count)

Kerry, by contrast to the rest of the crew, was something of an enigma to Jess. She noticed his attitude toward her becoming increasingly cool. Quietly spoken, often taciturn, he was clearly possessed of a brilliant mind. Although slow to volunteer information, if she asked a specific question relating to either the Destiny or Metisa, (the ship's computer) he became completely involved with the subject, explaining simply but precisely. However, she could not persuade him to talk about himself. Naturally this made her all the more curious about him. She frequently felt his scrutiny as if he were waiting for her to give herself away, although she could think of nothing she had said or done to arouse his suspicions. This was not the only thing about Kerry she found disturbing.

Weekend Writing Warrior - Sunday Snippet

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warrior and 8 Sentence Sunday, the weekly hops for everyone who loves to read and write! This is a new venture for me but such a great idea -

Writers share an 8 to 10 sentence snippet on Sunday each week. Be sure to visit the other writers - they're listed Below:

My series 'The Destiny Trilogy' started with one character - Kerry Marchant. Each book is a complete story but features some of the same characters. The series began with 'Starquest' and the third in the trilogy is 'Beloved Enemy (currently nominated for a RONE Award😊)  Although Kerry is not the main character Starquest, he is my favourite. He doesn't feature in the second book but stars in the third one! I thought it would be nice to introduce him to folk who may not have read the books, so here are ten sentences from Starquest.

(Jess, the main character has just been rescued from her stricken starship by the Destiny)

"When we received your distress signal, we ran a computer analysis. The conclusions were obvious. The only option was for you to abandon her (the ship) before her drive reached critical.”

The stern-faced man turned to look at her now. His blue eyes, cool as gunmetal, fixed on her until she felt herself blush under his relentless scrutiny. He smiled slowly, as if unaccustomed to such an action. He was, in fact, very attractive when he smiled. “Welcome aboard.”

The commander nodded in his direction. “Let me introduce Kerry Marchant, second-in-command.”

Although Jess still could not help feeling a little suspicious, she managed to smile back at him with a degree of confidence she did not feel.

Beloved Enemy's Birthday!

Can you believe it's a year since Beloved Enemy was published!
To celebrate I designed a new 'teaser' above to go with these two:

I have to admit I enjoy playing with graphics, so I'll be doing some more for Beloved Enemy when I get some time - but I must finish my current WIP which is a ghost story and a bit of a departure from Science Fiction, but I have some more SFs on the 'back burner'.

I'm looking forward to the RoNa Awards in London on Monday when I'll get to meet the other nominees, including those in my category, Christine Courtenay, Jan Jones and Kate Johnson. I'm a bit nervous as I've never been to a Romance Novelists event before but it should be a lovely, sparkly evening!

I thought I'd share the first chapter of Beloved Enemy with you (It's already on my sidebar but in case you missed it, here's the link):

Beloved Enemy - Teaser

Looking forward to the RNA RoNA Awards on 13th March
(Did I mention Beloved Enemy is on the shortlist for the Paranormal/Speculative Romance Category? ðŸ˜‰

Anyway there the other authors in the category are amazing so I'm not counting any chickens, I'm just thrilled to have got on the shortlist, but I thought I'd give a taster of the book over the next few weeks to celebrate the fact that it will be Beloved Enemy's first birthday on 11th March!

Excerpt from BELOVED ENEMY

He looked around, his face expressionless.
She frowned at his perusal. The furnishings of the small interior were necessarily sparse. A pilot seat and passenger seat to the front, and at the rear of the vessel, a small living and storage area, complete with a folding table and murphy bunk unit. If he didn’t like it, too bad. He could always go back outside and sleep rough if he
preferred.

“I dare say it will suffice,” he said at length.

“Well, thank you. I’m so glad it meets with your approval.”

His expression remained impassive. It seemed her cynicism was lost on him.

“It would be useful to have a name to call you.”

“Catrina. Catrina…Kincaid. I prefer to be called Cat.”

Again, that stunning smile spread over his face, and she noticed how his eyes seemed even bluer above the even, white teeth. Damn, there was something about him. She almost regretted she’d have to kill him eventually.

“The name suits you.” It did not sound like a compliment. “I am Kerry Marchant.”

“Yes, I know who you are.” She ignored his quizzical look. “As I said earlier, don’t get any ideas. This ‘cat’ has claws.

Note: This is an unedited excerpt and the final published version will be slightly altered.

Ax and Izzy are ascending the walkway into the belly of the ship, and I trail behind them. A welcome, familiar face is waiting to greet me at the top of the steps. Fern leans against the railing, her usual sunny face obscured behind a blanket of worry. Spotting me, she brightens for a nanosecond until she takes in my transparent ‘prisoner’ status.

She skips toward us with purpose. “What the hell?” She pierces Haydn with a murderous glare, planting her hands on her slim hips.
“Don’t. Interfere.” He growls out a warning as he pushes past her, hauling me along for the ride.

I shrug my shoulders as I eyeball my friend. “Don’t ask me for an explanation. No one is even speaking to me.”
“This is completely ridiculous, and totally unnecessary,” Fern yells as she stalks behind us like a miniature tornado.
“Babe,” Rylan says, stalling on the steps above us. “Let’s just get to the cabin and we’ll clear everything up.”
Haydn snorts and shakes his head. I deliberately impale him with my penetrating gaze, willing him to look at me so he can absorb the full glare of my frustration. But he’s as stubborn as ever, and he pretends not to feel my eyes burning a hole through the side of his skull. As I continue to stare at him—noting the ashen pallor of his skin, and how his once shorn hair has grown out, now curling and twisting around his ears and over his neck—I wonder if I’ve ever really known him at all. Or if he has ever truly known me.
Because if he did, he would know not to fear me. That there’s no need to treat me like this.

Monday's Ramblings - Space is amazing

I 'm sure you know by now I write Science fiction romance,  Two reasons for this. ROMANCE -
I am an incurable romantic!

SCIENCE FICTION -
when I was young the word 'science' put me off reading Science Fiction - I'm sorry I loathe the term 'sci-fi' not sure why, it just sounds derogatory to me somehow. I know everyone uses it, it's just me! But I have no illusions about myself  - I know what I write can more accurately be termed 'Space Opera' rather than 'real' science fiction, and I'm fine with that. Strange isn't it, how some words can grate on us and others might rub someone else up the wrong way but sound fine to our own ears!

Anyway, I digress. I have always loved looking at the night sky, with its myriad stars.  Thinking that each star is a sun, whose light has taken countless light years to get to us - and imagining what it would be like to explore space, and visit strange new worlds. What I didn't realise at the time (I'm talking about when I very young!) was that this is actually the basis of much of popular science fiction, rather than the monsters and laboratory test tubes I had imagined. One of the first Science Fiction books I read was Ray Bradbury's  'The Martian Chronicles' and I was hooked, and I swiftly devoured books by  Arthur C Clarke, Isaac Asimov, Anne McCaffrey etc.  I knew I'd found my genre and wrote my first SF adventure 'Starquest' several years ago. It started off as a straight futuristic adventure  but rapidly changed to a romance, I find it possible to write anything without a love interest!

I subscribe to an online newsletter called EarthSky which as well as a wealth of information, also has the most beautiful photographs many of them from hubble. The one on the top of this page is The Bubble Nebula.  I think its absolutely stunning. Who knew there were bubbles in space! If you believe God created the Universe, He must surely have a great sense of humour - as well as a wonderous sense of beauty.
